"There's a lot of good players out here," she said. "It should be a pretty good race. I definitely think I have a shot (to win it). "You always go into a tournament wanting to win, so I just have to keep trudging along and see what happens in the next couple of days." Howe knows what she needs to do in order to improve upon her score in today's second round, when she tees off at 7:40 a.m. on the back nine in the same foursome with Thurman, Poffenberger and Newren. "I just need to hit the ball better," Howe said. "My putting was kind of streaky; it was good at times and then it "I just had a hard time getting the speed down. On one putt I would run it by, and on another I'd leave it short. But I always felt like I had the line pretty good." In the first flight, Caryn Atkinson led the way with a 78, followed by Joyce Billings at 81, with Barbara Farmer and Jennifer Pierce tied at 82 and Gwen Adams at 84. Farmer led the low net scores with a 70, followed by Atkinson and Adams at 72. In the second flight, Marilyn Cooper shot an 87 for a one-shot lead over Nancy Adams at 88, followed by Mary Beaumont, Jill Hansen and Julie Knighton, all tied at 90. Sherdean Carter and Jane Lux shared the lead in the third flight with scores of 89, followed by JoAnn Florence and Tammy Gustaveson, tied at 92, and Louise Taylor with a 93. And in the fourth flight, Stefanie Fischer - a 12-year-old golfer from Layton - was tied for the top spot with Lenora Hutchins at 92, followed by Char Roetzel and Michelle Thompson, both at 94. September 15, 2002 Rookie squad set for Shootout FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -Former Weber State star Tenille Howe joins a rookie Utah squad for the 12th annual Utah-Arizona Shootout, which gets under way today at We-ko-pa golf course. Utah, which holds Howe a 7-4 lead in the series, has only two players on this year's team who have ever played in the Shootout -Terry Hansen and Brandon Hargett - and they have each played only once. The Utah seniors will be Doug Marriott and Jim Jensen, two experienced players but not in the Utah-Arizona Shootout. Utah's at-large group includes state amateur champion Gregg Oliphant and runner-up Jon Morgan, two buddies who likely will be paired together throughout the competition. In addition to Brandon Hargett, other members of the Utah team include Marty Jacks, Dave Pickett, Craig Woodward, Pete Stone and Herb Lyons. The Shootout starts with a four-ball competition this morning and foursomes in the afternoon. September 18, 2002 Arizona outlasts Utah in Shootout FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. -Utah's three-year winning streak came to an end Tuesday as Arizona secured a three-point victory in the Utah-Arizona Shootout. Arizona defeated Utah 37 1/2 to 34 1/2 in the 12th matchup of the states' golf associations at Wa-Ko-Pa golf course. Arizona edged Utah by four points in the singles competition to rally for the victory. Utah still leads the all-time series 7-5. Utah won the four-ball segment 13-5, while Arizona won the foursomes 12 1/2 to 5 1/2 and the singles 20-16. Four Arizona players made clean sweeps of their singles matches Tuesday. Armen Dirtadian downed Dave Pickett, Guy Gedeon shut out Herb Lyons, Erik Nielsen blanked Craig Woodward, and Gerry Graham swept Jim Jensen. On the Utah side, three players swept to victory. Brandon Hargett blanked Kevin Tone, Pete Stone swept Bob Munez, and Marty Jacks shut out Tom Beach. The Utah women came from behind to split their matches with Arizona. Tenille Howe split with Tui Selvaratnam, and Terry Hansen tied Missy Farr-Kaye. Doug Marriott birdied the final hole to grab a split for Utah against Ed Smith of Arizona. Utah State Amateur champion Gregg Oliphant defeated Steve Dallas 2-1, while state amateur runner-up Jon Morgan lost to Arizona's Jack Burke 2 1/2 to 1/2. 132 |
