Show Weber's first engine now sparkles like a diamond Community restoration effort can be viewed at Pioneer Days parade By CHARLES F. TRENTELMAN Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE -Despite its name, "Old Pneumonia" doesn't cough when Jerry Stanger fires it up these days. Nope, just a "er-RMMMMM!" and suddenly it's vibrating and roaring and rattling. And when Stanger lets the clutch out, it grinds and grumbles and hesitates and then it moves, ever so slowly, bumping and jerking through the gutter and into the street. This is the vision of heaven that Stanger set out to build two years ago. As Stanger finds himself saying over and over, "It's a diamond that was hidden and it just needed shining." "Old Pneumonia" is a 1936 Mack fire engine, the first fire engine that Weber County ever had. Before this engine, if your barn caught fire all you had to call was neighbors with buckets. Its station was at 12th Street and Washington Boulevard in Ogden. It covered the entire county, including Ogden Valley, so the firefighters had some long, cold drives. "They'd hear the call and just head for the smoke," said Stanger, who is a retired firefighter himself.
