Show Fremont outlasts March 13, 2002 Silver Wolves slide into 5-A semifinals JUSTIN JOHNSON Standard-Examiner staff LAYTON - It seemed a horrible way to decided such a classic soccer joust between Region 1 rivals Fremont and Layton in the state 5-A tournament quarterfinals, but the rules called for a shootout and that's what it "took to decide a winner. After 100 minutes of play Tuesday afternoon, the Silver Wolves stunned the league champion Lancers 1-0 and claimed their first semifinal berth in school history. The Lancers' missed five excellent scoring opportunities in the final 180 seconds, sending four shots just wide and driving another into the crossbar before settling for overtime. "I thought that little stretch right at the end of regulation was big," Crompton said. "At that point, our defense was on its heels and the game was theirs to win or Layton BRIAN NICHOLSON/Standard-Examiner Fremont's Tyler Meyerhoffer prepares to head the ball during Tuesday's state 5-A tournament game against Layton. The Silver Wolves defeated the Lancers in a shootout to advance to the semifinals. 119 |
