Show July 22, 2002 Time to hand out 'Do I Have A Brain?' awards After reading about and experiencing some current events here in the Top of Utah, I decided it was time to hand out some "Do I Have A Brain?" awards. These awards are for those who decided to fund and begin the following projects: Draining Pineview Reservoir in the middle of a drought because of a pending disaster (earthquake) that may strike at any time. Beginning major improvements on I-15 from 31st Street to Marriott-Slaterville in the middle of a heat wave with the following suggestions for alternate routes: 1900 West (oops, major construction); Wall Avenue (oops, more major construction); Washington Boulevard (it would bring people to Ogden). ? Calling a special session of the Legislature to find a way to cut $173 million from the budget, with education taking a $35 million to $45 million hit. Ask yourself the following questions: Why not delay the reservoir project until later in the water season or postpone it until a better water year? Surely there is no serious threat from an empty dam - a dam that will be empty with no help from anyone. Who made the renovation and earthquake-proofing of the state Capitol a priority? Who drew up and signed the Legacy Highway contract, with the inclusion of a hefty penalty clause should work be stopped because of lawsuits, knowing lawsuits were inevitable? Why have construction on three major north/south thoroughfares simultaneously? Why not concentrate manpower on one project at a time, completing the work in a shorter period of time and working during the night? Could it be to impress upon us the need for the Legacy Highway? I would be more impressed to see a rail system become a reality using the self-imposed tax money the citizens chose. Any suggestions for award nominees? Sharon H. Cammack West Point 51 |
