Show July 12, 2002 Last Surviving Granddaughter of Teresa Southwick and John Marriott Dies Ida Virginia Marriott Kyle BAKERSFIELD, CA - Ida Virginia Marriott Kyle, at age 90 of Bakersfield, California, passed away at home July 10, 2002 after a long illness. She was the last surviving grandchild of Teresa (Trezer) Southwick and John Marriott, early Utah pioneers. He founded the community of Marriott, Utah. She was born January 16, 1912 in Ogden, Utah the youngest daughter and child of Charles Arthur Marriott and Mary Farley Marriott. She was named after her Father's and Mother's sisters, Ida Marriott Creamer and Ida Farley Ferrin. Ida attended Mound Fort Elementary School, North Junior High and was graduated from Ogden High School in 1931. She attended Weber College on a music scholarship. Ida was employed at Utah General Depot at 2nd Street in Ogden in Personnel. She also worked at Mt. Bell as a telephone operator. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fulfilled many music callings in the Ogden 7th Ward and in several LDS Wards in Bakersfield. She had been an officer in the Relief Society, a Vis-iting Teacher, and most recently served as organist in her Bakersfield Ward. She was endowed with a special talent in music. At age five, she would play by ear any music she heard. Music became a major part of her life, not only for the enjoyment of others, but also as her livelihood. At age 16, she started playing in many Ogden area dance bands. She was pianist for the Hadley Band, the Vern Harrop Rainbow Orchestra, Shorty Ross Orchestra, Red Bills Band and the Benny Bentfield Band that played at the Wasatch Club in the Hotel Ogden. She was pianist for the Hollywood Whoopie Hounds, and in Bakersfield, the Dean West, Kenneth Fhasbener, Robert Bann, and Bunky Valdez Dance Bands. She provided music for civic organizations, country clubs, funeral homes and community events and a member of the Kern Philharmonic Society. She studied piano with renowned concert pianist Frederic Dixon which was a highlight of her life. He presented her in recitals in the Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel Ben Lomond and at Kingsbury Hall at the University of Utah. Ida taught piano for years in Utah and California. She was a life-member of the Musicians Union in both Ogden and Bakersfield. Throughout her life, she was sought after as an accompanist by many notable local soloists including Caroll Wright Hawkes DeBoer, Professor Roland Parry's groups at Weber College and in the Glenn Hanson/Faye Seager All Girl's Orchestra. She married Forrest Alvin Kyle in Ogden, August 20, 1947. He passed away November 22, 1960. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: Horace, Orion, Milton, Edward, and Darius Marriott and one sister: Madeleine Marriott Harrop. She is survived by one son, Bradley Forrest Kyle (Bette) of Los Oses, CA; and one daughter, Pamela Marileine Kyle of Bakersfield, CA; and a granddaughter, Loriann Elizabeth Kyle. Also surviving are one niece, Ann Marriott Wahlen of Ogden; and three nephews, Dennis Marriott, Layton; Lowell Marriott Harrop; and Jerry Harrop of Ogden. A funeral service in Bakersfield will be held July 15. Graveside services will be held next week in the Ogden City Cemetery, 12th Avenue and Center Street, under the direction of Lindquist Mortuary. 127 |
