Show February 6, 2002 Smog from inversion could greet opening of Olympics Standard-Examiner wire services SALT LAKE CITY - If you haven't noticed, the Wasatch Front is in the throes of a weather inversion. Not exactly what Utah had in mind for the Winter Games. Goodbye picture postcard. Hello smog. But it's just a normal winter day in Salt Lake City. The weather condition traps a cold layer of air pollution under a warmer layer of air. "Smog is a consequence of the inversions," said Tom Potter, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee's weather coordinator. The best way to get rid of an inversion is a storm, said Larry Dunn, meteorologist at the Na-tional Weather Service in Salt Lake City. A storm is headed this way Friday. But if it veers north to Idaho, it might have no effect Dunn said. Olympic organizers can't control the weather. But NBC can for its estimated 3 billion viewers worldwide. Last winter, it was busy taking "beauty shots" of sun-splashed slopes and southern Utah gems like Bryce Canyon. That's what the rest of the world will see if an inversion turns the city ugly during the Games. "If that means we go an entire day and all we see is the outer venues, that's how it will be," said David Neal, head of production for NBC Olympics. AUGUST MILLER/Standard-Examiner The sun glows red through the smog as it sets over Marriott-Slaterville. A storm that may move in Friday could help clear out the effects of a winter inversion. 18a |
