Very nice service. Thair left via air plane for S. Carolina. Apostle Richard R. Lyman was excommunicated from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints for immorality & adultery. It is a great shock to those who know him as he has been a valient worker in the church for many years. ExCommunicated Richard R. Lyman SALT LAKE CITY, Nov. 13 General authorities of the Latter day Saints (Mormon) church announced today that Richard R. Lyman, a member of the council of the twelve apostles, has been excommunicated. Church officials charged Lyman was guilty of a violation of the laws of Christian chastity. Notice of the excommunication was carried in the Deseret News, church owned daily newspaper, in a front page statement, Lyman is a prominent Salt Lake City civil engineer and has been a member of the council for many years. He declined to comment on the action against him. The council is one of the most important authorities of the church, ranking right behind President Heber J. Grant and his two counselors. This was said to be the first excommunication action taken against a member of the council in many years. Lymans successor will be chosen by the general authorities later. The council recently added two new members, Elders Ezra T. Benson and Spencer W. Kimball, to replace two who died this year, Sylvester Q. Cannon and Rudger Clawson. Age 73 This Month Lyman was born in Fillmore, Utah, 73 years ago this month. His grandfather, Amasa M. Lyman, who conducted negotiations for purchase of the Rancho San Bernardino, Calif., for Brigham Young, second president of the church, was ordained an apostle in 1840. His father, Francis M. Lyman, also an apostle, was ordained in 1880. Richard R. Lyman graduated from University of Michigan in 1895, with a degree of bachelor of scince in civil engineering. He Taught at B. Y. U. Upon his return to Utah, he taught at Brigham Young university for one year and in 1896 was appointed professor of civil engineering at the University of Utah. He remained in charge of this department until 1918. During a three years leave of absence, he took graduate work at University of Chicago and at Cornell university. He was graduated from Cornell in 1903 with a degree of master of civil engineering and in 1905 he received the degree of doctor of philosophy from the same university. From 1909 to 1918 he was vice president of the Utah state road commission. He also was a member of the Utah water storage committee at the time of its organization in 1922. He was one of five engineers named to investigate the Columbia river basin project and later was named one of a board of three consulting engineers for the metropolitan water district of southern California. He was a director and filled various offices on a number of business organizations in this area, including several insurance and real estate companies. |
