THE OGDEN STANDARD EXAMINER Honored By Local Groups Dr. and Mrs. Edward I. Rich who were honored by the Weber County Medical society and auxiliary Saturday night, after fifty years of active practice of medicine in Ogden by Dr. Rich. Dr. and Mrs. Edward I. Rich Honored by Medical Group Its like a story...the account of the lives of Dr. and Mrs. Edward I. Rich since their careers in medicine began fifty years ago in Ogden...Dr. Rich as the physician and Mrs. Rich as the physicians wife. As a compliment to Dr. Rich at the culmination of his fiftieth milestone in his professional career, the Weber County Medical society honored him at a dinner at the Hotel Ben Lomond on Saturday evening. A special feature of the program was a talk by Dr. Rich on Early Conditions in the City and County When He Started Practicing. Other speakers were Dr. Ezra C. Rich, Dr. Joseph R. Morrell and Judge James A. Howell. Times were vastly different from what they are now, he said. My practice took me from Centerville in the south to Deweyville in the north and it was no easy matter to get about in those days, when there were no automobiles. He stated there were only a hundred telephones in the city and one at each of the smaller towns in his territory, and that lighting facilities were bad, too. Our homes and offices were equipped with lamps and coal stoves, he said, and there were no hospitals. When we had to operate, we had to do our own sterilizing and set up our own outfits and hope the case would be successful. He also stated that the midwives had to do all the nursing. We had some good ones, too, he said. They were very splendid women. He related many of his past experiences. Doctor Rich was born in Paris, Idaho, and started practicing as a physician and surgeon at the age of 25, after finishing his education at Jeffersin Medical college at Philadelphia. He was married to Mrs. Rich, the former Elmira Cozzens, a year later and started practice in Ogden at that time. He and his brother, Ezra C. Rich, also an eminent physician of Ogden, were in partnership for ten years. Doctor Rich later went into practice for himself for 23 years and later with his son, Dr. Junior Edward, Rich, for 17 years. He proudly stated that the baby (Continued on Following Page)
