Wayment January 8, 2002 Marriott-Slaterville higher crime rates concern mayor No plans to raise municipal taxes on city's agenda By MATTHEW FLITTON_ Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - The city's rising crime rate, up nearly 66 percent over the past 12 years, is Mayor Keith Butler's primary concern as he addressed the state of the city recently. The city reported 1,118 incidents for 2001. Butler contrasted that number with 400 incidents listed for 1990, but he's unsure of the accuracy of those numbers. "That may or may not have been true," he said. "We have pretty good data now." Butler said he hopes resi- dents will use Neighborhood Watch and McGruff programs to curb an expected increase to 1,400 incidents in 2002. "Most (crime) happened at truck stops and motels. ... But they go through our residential areas to get to the truck stops," he said. Butler also reported the city still has no municipal taxes and no plans to start collecting them. There are two full-time employees, two part-time employees and the City Council and mayor receive a small stipend. That money comes from sales tax on commercial areas of the city. "We're surviving on that and getting along real well," Butler said. "But with the recession that could be iffy." The city has survived without the tax since its incorporation in July 1999. Such accidents are included in local incident calls for public safety service. January 20, 2002 Ogden teens tossed from truck MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE Two teens were treated for minor injuries Wednesday after they were ejected from their vehicle following an automobile accident. The boys, riding in a Ford Ranger, were traveling near 2900 West on Pioneer Road when their vehicle clipped a Toyota Celica traveling in front of them as the Celica attempted to turn left. The teens were traveling at excessive speeds, said Weber County Sheriff's Deputy Troy Windsor. The driver of the Ranger and a passenger in the bed, both 17, "had some bumps and bruises" after being ejected, Windsor said. The 33-year-old driver of the Celica was uninjured. The driver of the Ranger was cited for having an expired registration, failure to wear a seat belt and following too close. The passenger in the bed was given a seat belt ticket. 17 |
