Show March 2, 2002 Taking figures to international success takes steel Metal Creations shown on PBS Victory Garden By KRISTOPHER WOODBURY Standard-Examiner staff Name: Metal Creations Inc. Address: 777 W. 12th Street, Marriott-Slaterville Phone: (801) 621-0112 Fax: (801)394-7469 Web site: www. metal-creations.com What the company does: Builds themed displays for holidays, weddings, zoos and other promotional events, in addition to arches, gazebos, candelabras, bannisters and spiral staircases. Metal Creations works mostly in wrought iron and brass. Rudolph, with your nose so bright..." and your tail and your legs and your antlers too. Light-laden deer and other metallic creatures are commonplace at Metal Creations. Some are animated, others motionless. But metal menageries produced are often destined for greatness. The creations have been featured on nationally-televised programs such as Victory Garden on PBS and at extravagant light displays in cities across the nation. Often Metal Creations' structures, such as arches and gazebos, are used at weddings and social gatherings. Who's who: Milt Neeley is owner, president and general manager. "Right now there are four employees because this is a slow time. During the busy time I will have as many as 20 people," he said. Neeley also uses a lot of Business on-call artists, most of which are former employees. ? Clients: Projects have come to Metal Creations from Universal Studios, Callaway Gardens and the World Trade Center. The company has also worked with international customers, from Canada to England to Japan, mostly requesting iron-wrought animals. U.S. companies involved with display, promo-tions and advertising are Metal Creation's most constant clients. Revenue: Average sales during the past 10 years has been between $400,000 and $500,000 a year. It varies widely, Neeley said. Company history: Neeley "fell into" the metalworking market. An international business major, he couldn't find jobs related to his degree during the recession of the early 1980s. He bought Metal Creations in 1984 when it was located on 9th Street. Two years later, the company bought property on 12th Street, its current location. Metal Creations added buildings as needed; currently, it operates in three buildings with 8,000 square feet. 116 |
