Show Honors for Billy Green (Cont'd) November 19, 2002 KATIE ENGLERT/Standard-Examiner Fremont High's Billy Green, lifting weights on Monday at the school's weight room, is Utah's male finalist for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award. Heisman From 1C state 5-A quarterfinal appearance, to wrestling, his first love. "Billy started wrestling when he was in second grade. To him when he saw Santa Claus he knew wrestling season was close," said Green's father, Bill. "By the time he was in seventh grade he was wrestling with the high school kids. The bus would drop him off about a mile from Fremont High and he would walk the rest of the way," Bill said. By the ninth grade, Billy was on the Silver Wolves' varsity squad and was good enough to capture third place in the state 4-A 275-pound class. With two straight championships to his credit, Green is getting recruiting calls from all over the country, including powerhouses Missouri and Oklahoma. I'm just happy to be among the athletes getting recognized. I'm just having a lot of fun. - Fremont High's Billy Green 55 "Billy's received over 40 recruiting letters from Division I schools. We have two boxes at home full of letters. Half the Ivy League schools have contacted him as well as the military academies," said Bill. Green is also noted for his powerlifting. Earlier this year he won the AAU national powerlifting championship along with the North American bench press championship held in Los Angeles. Green has a personal best mark of 450 pounds in the bench press. He has also squatted 500 pounds and dead lifted 525. Billy, meanwhile, is taking all the recognition and accolades in stride. "I'm just happy to be among the athletes getting recognized. I'm just having a lot of fun," said Billy. Green's accomplishment aren't limited to athletics. Leadership has also been one of Green's traits. He was student body president at Rocky Mountain Junior High, and he is currently Fremont's student body president while carrying an impressive 3.70 GPA. Green is also listed among the Who's Who of American Athletes and Students. If Green does win the national award, he would be the second Utahn honored. Ogden High's Blake Moore won the award in 1997. Haertel was named a national girls finalists last week.
