Show further east. The IFA area and all its businesses are on the Cape Construction line; everything east of IFA will be served by this new line. Resolution 2008-O, ratifying this agreement, was approved unanimously in November 2008. The council approved the Park Committee's recommended rules for the city parks. New rules prohibit ATVs in the park, and limit skateboards and roller blades to designated areas. Prohibition of alcohol, littering, vandalism, and animals at-large have always been in effect. Permission is required for activities such as fireworks, golfing, shooting and archery. Smoking is now prohibited at parks, mass gatherings, and all bus stops, at the request of the Weber County Health Department. Deputy Brent Fowers and Bill Morris conducted a mock table-top disaster with the Emergency Management Program in April. FEMA funding in the amount of $448,000, to the Weber Fire District, was used to improve fire stations and equipment in the district. Our city is one of the areas served by the district. Councilman Scott VanLeeuwen reports that the fire district now has three new fire stations; only one has caught fire! The council approved the authorization of funds for purchase of a used Bona Vista Water District truck in the amount of $15,000.00. Dumpsters at both the Marriott and the Slaterville Park were available on April 18, 19, and 20, for spring clean-up items. Waste Management hauled away 12.8 tons of garbage during the spring clean-up. Deputy Brent Fowers arranged for inmate crews to help clean up the parks and garbage around the city. The annual fall clean-up was announced in the Post. A dumpster was located at both the Marriott Park and the Slaterville Park from November 14 to 16. It was a free service to residents so that fall waste could be disposed of. It was requested that waste be placed entirely in the dumpster and not left on the ground. The service was again sponsored by the city and Waste Management, and went well. Our thanks go to Scott VanLeeuwen and Trent Meyerhoffer for the hours of work they have done in cleaning up the parks. Ryan Domgard volunteered to clean up the leaves at the Marriott Park. Many residents expressed interested in switching to the city garbage collection service with Waste Management. Those interested in changing should check their contract with their current provider and follow their cancellation requirements before contacting the city. Once this is done, any one interested in obtaining garbage service under the city contract should contact Mayor Keith Butler at the city office. Ryan Child, Independent Auditor, reported to the council in December that his firm had completed the annual independent audit of the city and had prepared the financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008. He reviewed highlights from the audit and the income and expenditures in the financial statements and the balance sheets. He said the city is in good financial shape, has a good surplus, and is in overall compliance. He will submit the audit report to the state. Copies of the report are available for the public upon request. The annual independent was accepted by the council unanimously. Sheriff Brad Slater, in Volume 6, issue 2, of The Utah Sheriff, Second Quarter 2008, reminded us "Don't Fall for a Con." The article gave tips for protection from fraud and cons. We were advised to research and discuss an issue before acting. Call the Better Business Bureau or the Sheriff's Office if you have a concern. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The city office was one of the locations in the county selected for early voting for the presidential election, which began on Tuesday, October 21, 2008. The only cost to the city was for utilities, with the county paying for this election. The regular election was held there on November 4, 2008. 8 |
