Bob Bennett Friday to thank him for his role in securing a $448,000 federal grant for the department. The Federal Emergency Management Agency grant will be used to upgrade fire stations and firefighter personal safety equipment throughout the county. "As Weber County continues to grow, the fire department has to stay up to speed," Bennett said. "We are grateful we were able to convince the appropriations committee to send the money to Utah." He said the committee designates money for emergency aid throughout the United States. "If we didn't spend it in Utah, it would have been spent somewhere else," Bennett said. The grant money will be used to install automatic fire sprinkler systems in three of the district's six stations, said Chief David Austin. The stations, in Uintah Highlands, West Haven and Eden, also will be equipped with diesel exhaust systems to remove the harmful fumes from the firefighters' work areas. Another important purchase planned is self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters, he said. The equipment provides crews with fresh air as they enter smoky areas. "This is essentially their lifeline when they go into a structure," Austin said, Weber Fire District facts: 6 stations serving Farr West, Marriott-Slaterville, West Haven, Hooper, Huntsville and all unincorporated county areas 53 full-time employees (will be hiring three more in the coming months) 25 part-time employees Operates two ladder trucks, several pumper trucks and other fire engines Provides fire protection, emergency medical services, hazardous material response and technical rescue Source: Weber Fire District pointing to the large oxygen tank on a backpack-like harness. "And they are very expensive." The 30 systems the district acquired cost about $5,000 each, he said. Austin said each SCBA is equipped with a personal alert safety system that will emit lights and a loud siren if a firefighter does not move for about 30 seconds, thus alerting others that there may be a problem. There are also integrated radio communications and oxygen level indicators in the full-face mask. Each firefighter uses his or her own mask, he said, and the SCBA tanks are carried on the emergency vehicles. The grant also pays for a $42,000 compressor to fill the tanks.
