Show Senior Health Connection newsletter Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital Center July 2008 Urgent vs. Emergency Care HOSPITAL Where would you go if you thought you had a broken bone? Would you go to the hospital? If so, you might be wasting time and I money and not getting the most efficient care. Many people use the Emergency Room (ER) for conditions that are more properly treated at a doctors office or Instacare facility. ER care is expensive, and you pay some of that cost. Also, doc-tors and nurses triage patients in order to see the sickest people first. Doctors and registered nurses can treat urgent conditions or those that are not life-threatening but require attention within 24 hours. Examples include: Sore throat Headaches Sprains or strains Respiratory conditions Minor cuts Nausea and vomiting Broken bones needing x-rays Emergency conditions exist when you think your life is in danger, or you have a new onset of severe pain. These situations may include the following: Chest pain Severe breathing problems Major bleeding Sudden, unexplained loss of consciousness (source: SelectHealth) Cheesy Chicken Simmer 2 tsp. oil 4 small boneless chicken breasts 2 cups frozen broccoli florets 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup 1/4 lb.
