Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY October 2008 A beautiful, but dry month, ended in our community with a special activity for children on Halloween. The Pioneer Post, October issue, announced that the city would participate in a community Trunk-or-Treat to be held at the L.D.S. cultural hall parking lot, located at 250 North 1500 West. The city donated $100.00 to the community Trunk-or-Treat. It started at 6:00 p.m. Chili, donuts and hot chocolate were served. Prizes were given for the best decorated trunks. Winners were David and Sherry Wadman, first place, Rance and Tiffany Christensen, second, and Mike and Debbie Draper, 3rd place. From ail accounts, and pictures available, it is hard to say who had the most fun, children or adults. Next year the event will probably be moved to the city's parking Jot. Flu shots, administered by Applegate Home Care, were given on Tuesday, October 21, 2008, from 11.00 am. to 1:00 p.m. at the city building. Seniors with Medicare B received them free, with Medicare card and identification. Cost without Medicare was $25.00. This was a great opportunity close at hand to receive protection from what can be a deadly illness. The Mayor's Message in the October Pioneer Post reminded us how fortunate we are to have no municipal property tax. We have an excellent business base, which provides revenue for running our city. He thanked all the businesses within our boundaries, and encouraged residents to patronize these nearby business. Nominations for our city's annual awards were requested, with a deadline of November 27, 2008. These awards are a chance to recognize someone who has been of exceptional value to our city. The park behind the city office is the recipient of donated plants and trees. Gayle Allen of The Rock Garden at 399 Harrisville Road, has donated plants and ornamental grasses. Trees have been donated by Beverly and Lewis Robinson family, Bernice and Milton Kidman, and Scott and Karen VanLeeuwen. We can all enjoy their generosity in the coming years. Business licenses were approved at the City Council Meeting held on October 16, 2008, for two new businesses located in the former Cape Construction building. They are Addiction R/C, 1527 South 1100 West, Building B, a retail hobby store, and Line Side Electric, Inc., 1280 South 1200 West, electrical work. A public hearing was held on October 16, 2008, concerning the application by Rodney Price for a 16 acre Agriculture Protection Area in the vicinity of 3000 W. Pioneer Road, Parcels 150070021 and 150070011. City Administrator Bill Morris outlined the planning commission recommendation on the proposed area. There are several Agriculture Protection Area within the city. The current zoning of the property is agriculture with the General Plan showing the area is low density residential, which accommodates agricultural uses. The application conforms to the planning policies and objectives of the city. It is currently used for production of hay and pasture for animals, with the viability for agriculture production best suited for grazing. Existing farm improvements are adequate. The Planning Commission received no objections to the application, and recommends approval of the Agricultural Protection Area as specified in the application. Public comment came first from Rodney Price, the applicant, who said he runs an arena, and wants to keep growing hay for his animals. Jeanette Henrie presented the council with a letter stating her concern about dust. A neighbor's air conditioner compressor was damaged because of the dust. She would like the issue resolved. Previously Mr. Price has watered down the dust in the arena from canal water and should continue doing so. After the public hearing was closed, and the public meeting re-opened, a discussion on the application by the council ensued. Staff informed them that a riding arena is allowed in the agriculture zone, as long as it is operating with sound agricultural practice. The zoning will remain the same in an Agriculture Protection Area. Mr. Price was questioned about the dust problem. He said that he has no 139 |
