Show The Pioneer Post Volume X Issue 5 Marriott-Slaterville City Newsletter May Noxious Weeds Although there was not much in April showers this year, it has not deterred the local weed population from sprouting. The Utah Commissioner of Agriculture determines the primary weeds that are noxious. Noxious weeds are non-native, invading species that pose a serious threat to native plant, wildlife habitat, agriculture, and livestock. The Utah Noxious Weed Act asks property owners to control noxious weeds on their land. The following is a list of the primary noxious weeds: Dyer's Wode Hoary Cress "Whitetop" Perennial Pepperweed Musk Thistle Canada Thistle Yellow Starthistle Scotch Thistle Russian Knapweed Spotted Knapweed Squarrose Knapweed Diffuse Knapweed Quackgrass Bermudagrass Medusahead Rye Johnsongrass Field Bindweed Leafy Spurge Purple Loosestrife Puncture Weed Morning Glory Weeds are best controlled through an integrated approach. First, is weed prevention by landscape planning and weed barriers. Second, is tilling and cultivating the ground to stop weeds from taking control. This also includes putting on some gloves and pull out the weeds by hand. Make sure to dispose pulled weeds properly to prevent re-seeding. Lastly, is chemical sprays. This includes treating property with 2-4D products. This will not kill grasses, only the weeds. This is especially needed on roadside where grass is needed for erosion control and noxious weeds are predominant. Remember that 2-4D only works if it is sprayed when temperatures are consistently below 85 degrees. Also consider pre-emergent products, such as Trifluralin, to retard the weed seed germination. Use caution when spraying for weeds around water, animals, and children. Follow directions for any product you are using to control weeds. 157 Working together we can get rid of these noxious weeds and make a better community.
