He was presented with the Joseph Breeze Award, given each year to the athlete who contributed the most to Weber State College during that particular year. He also _teceived the Outstanding Player Awards for Cross Country, Indoor Tack and Outdoor Track. The former Roy High star has won a total of 12 varsity letters, for + each in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track. He is the first Weber State athlete to be named All-American in two different sports (Cross Country and |..door Track) and could well earn All-American honors in Outdoor Track this season. His time of §:43.2 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, is the third fastest by an American collegian runner this - season. Friedli will be competing in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two weeks. He is the 1981 Conference indoor 1,500 meters champions and Outdoor Steeplechase champion. Both of his times in those events are Conference records as well. named the Outstanding Volleyball player on the Wildcat’s team. In 1980, she was named the WSC Outstanding women’s basketball player and was First Team All-Conference Mountain Division. She led the team in scoring as a junior with 16.0 points per gamed and 4.5 assisted. She was accorded All-American honors for Region Seven by the National Scouting Association/Women’s Pro Basketball’ League. Penny was named to the annual Copper Classic All-Tournament team three consecutive seasons. She holds the school record for career, season and game assists for the Lady Wildcats. In softball, she had the highest batting average on the team as a junior and holds the school record for most hits in a game (5), most stolen bases in one game (4) and most stolen bases in one season (15). On the scholastic side, Terry Elton, a middle distance runner for the Wildcats during the past four seasons, was the recipient of the an Field daho. ‘rom t’s n the — DOUG FRIEDLI (Cross Country-Indoor Track-Outdoor Track) and PENNY WANBERG \Volleyball-Basketball-Softball) were named the 1980-81 Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year. They both received the John’s Jewelry Gold Watch Award, given each year to tne senior athlete who has contributed the most to Weber State College during his or her athletic career. Last Fall, he finished 16th in the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which is the highest finish ever by a Big Sky Conference runner in that particular race. Friedli’s athletic achievement are not confined to the track. He was recently named by the Weber State College School of Business as the 1980-81 Outstanding Marketing student.
