Show WSC to construct TV station by Steve Fifield and Weber State College has entered the television era. In April, the FCC granted the college a license to begin ‘construction of a broadcasting fort on the part of the college. The first stage of the project will be the production of a cable system. A satellite receiving dish is already in place atop the Stewart Library that will feed a signal into public access channel nine of the Ogden City Cable system. Mary Jo LaTulippe received the Presidential Outstanding Staff Award in the professional staff, ad- ministrative staff and category executive Jan Cecil and and Jack Eilander were awarded the Presiden- tial Outstanding Classified Staff Awards. The award program is in its first year at the college and recognizes service to faculty, staff and students as well as dependability, creativity and contributions to the college. Besides the $1,000 cash prize the three will also receive a presidential plaque and a reserved parking place for the 1984-85 fiscal year. Mrs. LaTulippe is a counselor in the WSC Women's Educational Resource Center. She came to the college in 1976 and prior to that worked as a counselor in the Weber School. District and in the Jordan School District. She has an associate degree. from Weber State, a baccalaureate from Utah State University and in. Brigham Young University. Mrs. LaTulippe is a member of the M. Cecil, are the parents of four children and have six grandchildren. Eilander is the assistant custodial foreman in buildings and grounds and has been at the college for 30 years. Before coming to the college he worked for the U.S. government in the Ogden Arsenal. After service in the U.S. Army, Eilander began work- ing at WSC as a custodian the same year that the college moved from the campus in downtown Ogden to the Harrison location. Eilander was also one of the two original police officers on campus and had responsibilities for both custodial and campus security for a number of years. system is to being developed to allow the college time to prepare for an actual broadcast sta- tion. Linda Wolcott of instructional development will be Supervising the cable station. She said that the cable channel will be operational by early summer and will run from 7 a.m. to 5 -P-m. Monday through Friday. “We are starting off slow so we can do what we do well," Walcott explained. Howard, dean of Arts and Humanities, said, "We will not do any Original programming other than local news and an Ogden magazine format.” Howard explained that The Learning Channel is primarily a cablecasting company. Arrangements are presently being worked out that would allow the company to broadcast. Howard said, “The Learning Channel is excited about going live on the air rather than cable. It's not going to be the quality of PBS but then again it's not intended to be.” Although students won't have the . opportunity to do much original pro- gramming on either the cable channel or the television Station, both will provide’ hands on_ experience. Students will be involved in the day to day operating duties of the station. These day to day experiences will give Weber State students an advantage over broadcast students who merely learn theory. The Learning Channel is a company based in Washington D.C. that provides educational programming for many cable stations throughout the country. In approximately 18 months the second stage of the college's television will provide many opportunities for the college, students and community. She has worked in that department for eight years, before that working for five years in the WSC music department. Mrs. Cecil is the secretary/treasurer for the WSC chapter of the Utah Public Employees Association and has been active in the Utah cancer society for a number of years.
