Show ~WSCAA — Scholarships provide “full ride” for six top high school seniors | Y; Dear fellow alumm, “Time does pass quickly when you are having fun!" In past years, in many situations, I have over-used this expres- sion with a tone of sarcasm. And to-add further insult to the matter, with a slight tilt of my head and a gleam in my eye, I find myself using it with all sincerity: During the past eight years that I have been on the Alumni Board of Directors, I have had the special opportunity of working with, and learning to love and respect, so many fine people spending their time to better Weber State College. Many individuals have come and gone on the board, but they continue to be WSC boosters, spreading the word and promoting a better P. -sidential scholarships of $7,000 each have been awarded to six outstanding area high school graduates by the WSCAA. According to Jim Alvey, coordinator of school services, the scholarships provide four years of tuition and fees, and approximately $300 cash per quarter. The students were selected from over 60 finalists who had composite scores on the American College Testing Program (ACT) of at least 27 and a minimum grade point average of 3.7. In addition, extracurricular activities, leadership abilities, character and personal achievements were also considered. “These are some of the most | outstanding students in the state. I have seen the real inner working of the school, and I marvel at how so much is accomplished by so few. We are fortunate to have at Weber so many dedicated people, starting with President Brady, and traveling through the entire organization. I appreciate them for their friendship and service to the alumni organization and to me personally. I leave with a deeper love (if possible) for the college than when I took my first position on the board. I am also leaving one Gary Taylor Roy High William P. Miller Scholarship Cynthia A. Moench Scholarship Director calls alumni “backbone” of WSC Roger Rawson by Edie Hester, Executive Director elected to WSCAA Board Roger Rawson recently became a _ member of the WSCAA Board of Directors. He brings to the Board a long list of invaluable credentials and accomplishments on WSC's behalf —not the least of which was while he was still a student officer trying to influence the State Legislature that the campus needed a new library. He crammed about 22 people into a phone booth, labeled it “Library,” and got a TV station to cover the story. After his graduation in 1964, with the first four-year class, he taught history and political science at Roy High School. He later obtained a Master's degree in economics from the University of Missouri. Roger has completed ten years in the Utah House of Representatives, serving eight of those years on the executive leadership committee. The WSC School of Education honored him with the School Bell Award; Phi Delta Kappa selected him “Man of the Year,” and he has been awarded a WSC Presidential Citation. But the accomplishment he is most proud of was helping to get the Master of Education program started on campus. In the last election he won a seat on the Weber County Commission for a four-year term. He is married to the former Kay Thompson. They and their six children live in One of our goals as alumni and educators is to enable students to identify and sometimes challenge the assumptions of experts and leaders, to challenge their own conclusions about complicated problems. As we peel back the layers of Weber State College history, we find the essentials of the college —the alumni—the backbone. Our role now is to oblige students to cultivate “our fields,” our former programs, by saying “We hand them to you." _ As students we were well supported perhaps unknowingly, by our alumni. We have them to thank, and our future generations now to think about. WSC is providing the expert leadership in the search for a better world, without compromising ourselves or our institution. How we do so will depend on the nature of individual personalities, alumni Hooper, Utah. He is president of pulling together. Thompson Rawson Co. and RawUte Ranch.
