Sports Information Director Distance runner CARMEN GARDUNO earned All-American honors and became Weber State’s first woman ALL-AMERICAN at the recent AIAW National Cross Country Championship in Pocatello, Idaho. Carmen placed fourth in the National Division II run on November 21 with a time of 18:26. The top 25 finishers in each division were awarded | All-American honors. : A native of Toluca, Mexico, Carmen is a sophomore at Weber State. She came to the : attention of the Weber State track coaches when she set a Mexican national record of 9:35 in the 3,000-meter run at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut Calif., in April 1980. Before coming to Weber State, Carmen was a torch bearer at the Mexican Olympic Trials and competed for Mexico in the Pan American Games in Puerto Rico in July 1979. In her first quarter of competition for Weber State, Carmen won the 1980 Region Division I Cross Country Championship in Seattle. 7° In addition to her honors in cross country, Carmen was also the 1981 Region 7 Champion: in the 3,000-meter run (indoor) and 5,000-meter run (outdoor). : In special recognition, CARMEN GARDUNO will be honored at a basketball halftime when she returns from Mexico after the Christmas Holidays.
