Show WSCAA New continuing education benefits by Edie Hester, Alumni Director Weber State College Alumni Association in cooperation with the WSC Division of Continuing Education is offering continuing education benefits for alumni of the college, according to Margaret Favero, President of WSCAA. Dear fellow alumni, Along with many of you I am looking forward to spring (will it ever come?) and the new dashes of excitement that are sure to follow. Talk about excitement! What alumni did not thrill with our victory at Reno and the return of the Big Sky title to Weber State? It truly exemplifies the quality of player we have this year, along with the fine coaching staff. Our hats are off to you Neil, Dick, Dan and team for the great work done this year. We are also excited about our newest member of the Alumni Board, Coach Dick Hunsaker. Congratulations, Dick, and how pleased we are to have you join us. Another “hats off” to Jane Miner and the exciting Lady Wildcat basketball team which brought home a second-place trophy from the Mountain West Athletic Conference tournament. This is the first twenty-game winning season for the ladies. They will represent. Weber State at the National Women’s Invitation And, Tournament in Amarillo, TX in their first post-season tournament. not to be outdone, Coach John Webb of the Men's Varsity Wrestling Team brought home the Big Sky title for the second time in four years. Tiny Scriven (and they tell me he really is) brought to Weber State an eighth place rating in the Nationals and is now our first all-American wrestler. Another feather in Weber State's cap! We extend our love and appreciation to Dr. Jean Kunz for her outstanding achievements which earned her the prestigious H. Aldous Dixon Award for 1983. The Alumni Board is proud to have played a part in her selection. Spring brings titles, changes, reorganizations and a touch of new life. Our Board is always working to do, achieve and accomplish things for the Alumni Association. Join us. We need your support and input because we do represent you. Me argare/ Favero President @ SCAA “We are aware of the constant need for our alumni to update skills for their jobs, and their desire to take classes, such as dancing and the arts. In order to help with these needs and desires, we are working closely with the Division of Continuing Education to provide opportunities for our former would bring alumni back to campus for a week or two of intensive study, and many other types of programs. We would appreciate hearing from the alumni to know what they would like us to offer, Dr. Ulibarri noted. Alumni interested in learning more about continuing education possibilities or who would like to let us know what types of classes and programs they are interested in should call the Alumni Office, at (801) 626-6564, Now Open For Alumni Awards Each year, the Weber State College Alumni Association recognizes the achievements of its alumni through the presentation of its cherished DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD. These awards are given to WSC Alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers and community service. The College has honored outstanding individuals who have given of their time and talents to WSC through the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD. Distinguished Service Award nominees need not be alums of the College. Nominations are now being considered for both of these important awards, which are presented at Homecoming in the fall. If you know of an individual which you would like to nominate for either the Distinguished Alumni/Service Awards, please fill out the coupon below and we will send you the nomination form. Returned Comments mean wasted dollars With the prospect of decreased budgets for WSC, the Alumni Office is trying to find ways to increase efficiency and keep costs to a minimum. You, as one of 50,000 alumni or friends of WSC can help! For example: This issue of Comment costs only 7¢ to print and 5¢ to mail, Nominations students.” With the Alumni identification card, a ten percent discount is being offered on all scheduled workshops, classes and programs offered by the Division of Continuing Education, according to Dr. Richard Ulibarri, Dean of Continuing Education. We are looking at additional options such as video tape study groups for alumni in areas outside of Utah, at a summer “Alumni College” which but it will cost 25¢ if it is returned to us because of an incorrect address. You can help us save money by keeping us informed of your address changes—as well as those of your family. Also let us know if you receive more than one copy. WSC Alumni I.D.’s $3 after July 1 Beginning July 1, there will be a $3 charge for WSC Alumni I.D. cards. “The fee will be charged only to defray actual costs of printing and distributing the cards," said Edie Hester, Alumni Director. The card provides free use of the WSC Library; two-for-the-price-ofone tickets for many WSC sponsored activities; star shows at the Ott planetarium at the student rate of 50¢ and a ten percent discount at the WSC Bookstore on special promotional items. Monk Emeritus President Former professor of botany, assistant dean of the School of Arts, Letters and Sciences, and director of research and development, Dr. — ~ Ralph Warner Monk, has been named president of the Emeritus Faculty Chapter of the WSC Alumni Assn. Since his retirement from WSC in — 1981, he and his wife, Eunice (Oaks) have served an LDS mission in Indiana. Dr. Monk was the first charter president of the WSC chapter of Sigma Xi; he was the first radiation “9 safety officer and chairman of the Radiation Safety and Controlled > Substances Committee. He compiled the first Radiation Safety Manual which dealt with radiation exposures and their effects. He served WSC and its students for 34 years, He was president of the South Ogden Kiwanis Club and for six years was director of Regional Science Fairs in the Ogden area. He © served as director of Utah System of — Higher Education R.E.S.I.A. project and helped develop educational training modules for industrial firms. He was also a research consultant for the U.S. Dept. of Energy,— Dr. Monk is listed in Who's Who — in the West and American Men of Science.
