Show Graduation Honors at Graduation — Candidates for graduation at Weber State College may receive honors in relation to their achievement in all their registered work according to the policy statement below: Summa Cum Laude — The candidate's cumulative grade point average must rank in the top 3 percent of all candidates for a Bachelor's Degree in the school of their major. However, the candidates grade point average must be 3.90 or above. Magna Cum Laude — The candidate's grade point average must rank in the top 8 percent of all Bachelor Degree candidates from the school including those designated Summa Cum Laude and the grade point average must be 3.80 or higher. Cum Laude — The candidate's cumulative grade point average must rank in the top 16 percent of all Bachelor Degree candidates from the school including those designated as Summa and Magna Cum Laude and the candidates grade point average must be 3.60 or higher. Associate Degree Candidates: Those Candidates for the Associate of Arts and the Associate of Science whose cumulative grade point average ranks in the top 5 percent of all candidates from each school and is 3.85 or higher will be awarded "High Honors". Those candidates whose grade point average is among the top 15 percent is 3.60 or higher will be awarded "Honors". Honors for the Commencement program are determined during spring quarter and do not reflect final grades for that quarter. The names of honor graduates are published in the Commencement program and elsewhere as the President may direct. Grade Requirements—A student must attain an average grade point of at least 2.0 for all his registered work. Credit Restrictions—Not more than 30 quarter hours of D grade credit may be applied toward graduation. The school or department, however, may reject any or all D grade work toward the major or minor requirements. REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR DEGREES Minimum Requirements—A candidate for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of General Studies Degree, must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. Upper Division Requirement—A minimum of 60 credits of upper division work. Major Requirements — Major programs which require a minor will consist of not fewer than 40 and not more than 60 credits in the major field, major programs without a minor shall consist of not more than 85 credits in the major field. Minor Requirements—A minor is a program of study generally selected to compliment and strengthen a student's major and/or enrich the student's overall educational program. Some bachelor degree programs do not require a minor. See your major program of study outline (o determine if a minor is required. For the minors available, see the Majors and Minors listing in this catalog. Change in Graduation Requirements — Students normally are held to the requirements outlined in the catalog published four years before the year of their graduation. Where there is written agreement between a department chairman and a student, graduation requirements within a student's major or minor may be met by completing the requirements outlined in any catalog published one, two, or three years before the year of graduation. To meet specific and general education requirements, a student normally follows the requirements listed in the catalog published four years before the year of graduation. With the approval of the Graduation Office a student may complete the specific and general education requirements by following the requirements outlined in a catalog published one, two, or three years before graduation. Residence Requirement — A candidate for the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of General Studies Degree must have a minimum of 45 credits in residence at Weber State College and be registered at the College during at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to graduation. Foreign Language Requirement—A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one or more approved foreign languages. A maximum of 15 college credits from high school may count toward filling the foreign language requirement, provided the student can pass an exami- 18 General Education nation to demonstrate proficiency in the subject. (For a list of examinations see the Foreign Language Department in this catalog). Transfer credit from another institution will be recognized without an examination. School or Department Requirements—Further information concerning specific courses will be provided under the discussion of school or department requirements and instructions. Candidates for graduation in the School of Education must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Utah State Board of Education for certification of elementary and secondary teachers. Specific Course Requirements—All candidates must include in the 183 credits required for graduation the following courses: Credits English 101, 102, 103 (English Composition) 9 Health Education 101 or 102 or 103 2 Physical Education 3 (For specified activities see Physical Education Department) The State Requirement in American History, Government and Economics 3-5 Senate Bill Requirement in American History, Government, and Economics may be satisfied by: 1. Completing one of the following courses: Economics 274, Economic History of the United States; Economics 430, Business and Government; History 170, American Civilization; History 120, and History 121, United States History; History 420, Constitutional History of the United States; Political Science 110, American National Government; Philosophy 320, Philosophy of Democracy. (Economics 274, History 120, and 121, or 170, Political Science 110, and Philosophy 320 may also be applied to general education requirements.) or 2. Presenting advanced placement credit in American History or suitable transfer courses from other institutions or 3. Passing a special examination administered before the end of the second week of each quarter under the direction of the Dean of the School of Social Science. General Education Area Requirements—The General Education Program described in the following sections is required of all students who receive a bachelor degree from Weber State College To provide the broadest possible background in general education the selection of courses should depend upon the high school preparation. The student who has done well in a high school course in a given field should not select a course that might repeat essentially the same subject matter. Students cannot use courses in their major or minor areas to satisfy general education requirements. Humanities Area Bachelor of Arts: Select 15 credit hours from at least 4 groups. Bachelor of Science: Select 9 credit hours from at least 2 groups. Bachelor of General Studies: Select 8 credit hours from at least 2 groups. (One literature course is required for all three degrees) Groups: I. Art- Art 101, Introduction to Art (3) Art 105, Basic Drawing (3) Art 301, History of Art—Paleolithic through Roman (3) Art 302, History of Art—Byzantine through Renaissance (3) Art 303, History of Art—Baroque through Modern (3) II. Communication— Com 102, Principles of Public Speaking (3) Com 105, Communication Skills in Human Relations (3) Com 111, Introduction to Discussion and Parliamentary Law (3) 19 |
