Auto Body Repair II (Formerly Auto Body 120 and 121) (1-10) Fiberglass repair, small repairs, priming and painting. Auto glass repairs, auto body struction, damage estimation alignment. AWS 104. Auto Body Repair III (Formerly Auto Body 200 and 201) (1-10) Disassembly, assembly and alignment procedures, accessible damage, non-accessible damage, contour distortions, torn surfaces repair and frame repair. AWS 122. Automotive Painting I (Formerly Auto Body 110 and 111) (1-10) Manuals and procedures, equipment set-up and and body panel operations, painting materials, paint types, surface preparation, masking, paint application, paint problems and correction. AWS 123. Automotive Painting II (Formerly Auto Body 210 and 211) (1-10) Job estimating, finish applications, acrylics, epoxics, lacquers, transfer films, accent stripes, vinyl roofs, polishing, detailing and waxing. AWS 124. Automotive Painting III (Formerly Auto Body 220 and 221) (1-10) Striping, lettering, stencil work, detailing of interiors, brush graining, trim and upholstery work, custom painting and murals. AWS 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In ordo*: to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offfering will appear on the student transcript. A W S Su AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE Richard K. DeMoss and Rondo H. Erickson, Advisers The two-year Automotive Service curriculum consists of practical work experience in inspecting, testing, servicing, and repairing all phases of the automobile. The curriculum prepares students for beginning employment at general service and repair levels as mechancs and service technicians. Students majoring in Automotive Service may choose from three basic programs. The Associate of Applied Science Program includes a complete Automotive Service curriculum and fulfills all the general requirements for an Associate of Applied Science Degree. The Institutional Diploma Program also includes a complete Automotive Service curriculum; however, fewer general education courses are required. The Institutional Certificate Program is a shorter program designed to give the student competency within a selected area of Automotive Service. Associate of Applied Science and Institutional Diploma programs are approximately two years in length. Institutional Certificate Programs can range from one to eighteen months. NOTE: Students who wish to continue and complete a Bachelor of Science Degree in Automotive Engineering Technology must make application with the department chairman to determine a suitable course of study. Usually more than two additional years are required to complete a Bachelor of Science Degree after completing this two year program. Career Outlook: Job opportunities as mechanics and technical specialists are available at all job entry levels. Most graduates obtain positions as mechanics with major dealerships, truck lines, fleet operators or in small specialty repair and service shops. Many, after gaining more experience, open their own repair shop or operate a franchised service shop for a larger company. Some students become specialists in one particular system, such as automatic transmissions, and are employed by large overhaul and rebuilding companies or small specialty shops. All areas of employment, for the skilled auto mechanic, look excellent for the forseeable future. Program: Automotive Service—Associate of Applied Science Degree I. General Requirements: A. 109 total credit hours are required. B. The degree requires a maximum of 67 credit hours in the maj or field. C. English 101 (3) and English 102 (3) or Communication 102 (3) or 232 (3). Technology — Automotive Service D. At least 20 hours from the general education courses listed in the catalog, including at least one course in each of the five areas, Humanities, Life Science, Physical Science, Social Science, and Other. E. An overall G. P. A. of 2.00 or C. II. Specific Requirements: A. Automotive Service courses required (66 credit hours): Automotive Service 102 (10), 112 (10), 122 (10), 151 (4), 202 (10), 212 (10), 222 (10), 230(2). B. Program: Automotive Service — Institutional Certificate Individualized programs may be designed by the student and the faculty adviser to meet the specific needs of individual students. In each case the program must follow the guidelines for an Institutional Certificate and must have approval of the Department Chairman. AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE COURSES 102. Brakes, Suspension and Steering (1-10) Operation, diagnosis and maintenance of brake, suspension and steering systems. Five credit hours lecture and five credit hours lab per week. S 102A. Brakes (5) Principles, repair and adjustment of the brake system. 21/a Credit hours lecture and 2]/2 credit hours lab per week. S (Evening only) (102 A + 102 B constitute 102). 102B. Suspension and Steering (5) Principles, repair and adjustment of the suspension and steering systems. 2V% Credit hours lecture and VA credit hours lab per week. A (Evening only) (102A + 102B constitute 102). 112. Engines (1-10) Operational principles of basic engine systems and major overhaul of the complete automotive engine. Drive Mechanisms (1-10) Theory, operation, diagnosis and maintenance of the clutch, standard transmission, automatic transmission, drive lines, differentials and front wheel drive units. Drive Mechanisms (5) Theory, operation, diagnosis, and maintenance of the clutch, standard transmission, drive lines, differentials and front wheel drive. 2Va Credit hours lecture and 2Vi credit hours lab per week. Automotive Fundamentals (3) Operation, diagnosis and repair of selected automotive systems, as well as general auto shop orientation for beginners and non-automotive majors. VA Credit hours lecture and 1 Vz credit hours lab per week. AWS 151. Automatic Transmission Overhaul (4) Operation, diagnosis, maintenance and overhaul of the automatic transmission. Two credit hours lecture and two credit hours lab per week. Prerequisite Automotive Service 122 or 122B. W(S Evening). 189. Cooperative Work Experience (1-9) Open to all first year students in Automotive Service. The course objectives for each student will be developed between the student, the department, and a suitable employer providing the opportunity for on-the-job experience. Evaluation of course participants will be shared between the employer, student, and the department. A W S Su 202.
