Show Composite Majors Composite Majors COMPOSITE TEACHING MAJORS In lieu of the major and minor, a candidate may elect a composite teaching major which consists of a minimum of sixty-nine hours of subjects in closely related fields. The composite major does not require an accompanying minor. In many cases, the requirements of the composite major may include courses which are also used to satisfy General Education requirements. Program: Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching Major— Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. Specific course requirements of the college (see index). B. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Psychology 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching majors. C. A minor is not required. D. Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better in major courses. E. Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.25 G.P.A. and a demonstrated competence in English and a second language to be used in teaching. F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Sixty of the 183 total hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). H. Students obtaining a Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teacher Education Program). These courses must include the following: Education 195 (1), 300 (3), 350 (3), 363 (3), 462 (3), 364 (4), 495 (15), 499(5). II. Specific Requirements: A. Minimum of 70 credit hours. B. The Bilingual/Bicultural Composite Teaching major consists of two teaching minors, one of which must be in a subject which Utah Secondary schools are required to teach. (Minimum of 25 hours each.) C. Bilingual/Bicultural requirements (Minimum of 20 hours): 1. Courses required: Education 410 (3), 411 (3), 412 (3), 413 (3). 2. Electives (8 hours minimum): Education 414 (3); Anthropology 204 (3), 211 (3), 310 (5), or 350 (2-5); Humanities 353 (3), History 214 (3), 326 (3) or 426 (3); Psychology 193 (2); Sociology 321 (3) or 410 (3). D. Students planning to pursue the Bilingual/Bicultural Composite major should contact the advisor for bilingual/bicultural education in the School of Education for advisement. 48 Program: Biology Composite Teaching Major—Bachelor Degree I. Psychology 101 (5) in the Social Science area is recommended for Biology Composite Teaching majors. A minor is not required. Biology Composite Teaching majors must have a C or better major courses. E. Biology Composite Teaching majors must achieve an overall 2.25 G. P. A. F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Minimum of 69 credit hours in the biological sciences. B. Biological Science courses required. 1. Botany 110 (5), 111 (2), 112 (5), and 362 (5). 2. Microbiology 203 (2). 3. Zoology 160 (5), 201 (5), 211 (5), 212 (5), 330 (5), and 381 (4). 4. Botany 345 (5) or Zoology 440 (4) or 445 (4) or 447 (4) or 448 (4). 5. Botany 498 (3); Botany 320 (5) or Zoology 420 (5) or 421 (5). Electives: Additional Biological Science courses needed to meet the state requirements of 69 credits should be discussed in advance with the advisor. Minimal support courses required: NOTE: It is recommended that more advanced courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry be taken, especially if graduate studies are planned beyond the bachelor of science degree. These should be discussed in advance with the advisor. Program: Business Education Composite Teaching Major— Bachelor Degree I. General Requirements: A. Specific course requirements of the college (see index). Economics SS274 (5) or 430 (4) is recommended to satisfy the state requirement. B. Bachelor Degree General Education requirements (see index). Specific general education courses required of Business and Economics majors (14 credit hours): Mathematics PS115 (5), Economics SS101 (5), Data Processing GE101 (4). C. Pre-Business Core: Prerequisite for all upper division courses (15 hours): Economics 102 (3); Accounting 201 (4), 202 (4); Office Administration 225 (4). D. Upper Division Core (12 hours): Management 301 (4); Marketing 301 (4); Business Administration 320 (4). E. Students who have taken Shorthand or Typewriting in high school will be placed in the appropriate level courses by means of an evaluation of their proficiency. Any skill courses that are bypassed may be replaced by elective courses in business. F. Students transferring credits from another institution must take at least one Typewriting and one Shorthand course at Weber State College to verify their skills. 49 |
