Show Humanities — Foreign Languages D. A grade of C or better in all major courses. E. Majors must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.00 or C. (Teaching majors must achieve an overall G.P.A. of 2.25.) F. 183 total hours are required for this degree. G. Sixty of the 183 hours must be upper division (courses numbered 300 and above). H. Students obtaining a Teaching Major must satisfy the School of Education Certification Program (see Teaching Education Program). French students may also elect from: 303 (3), 420 (3), 430 (3), 440 (3), 450 (3). German students may also elect: 465 (5). Spanish students may also elect from: 303 (3), 344 (1), 411 (3), 412 (3), 414 (3), 415 (3), 416 (3), 417 (3), 430 (3). Majors may also elect from courses taught by other departments upon prior approval of their major advisor and the department chairman. C. 340 (5) must be completed prior to commencing student teaching. D. Teaching majors must student-teach in their language for a minimum of one quarter. E. Majors must also complete at least one quarter's successful study in a second foreign language. F. Humanities — Foreign Languages Program: Minor or Teaching Minor (French, German or Spanish) I. General Requirements: A. A grade of C or better in all minor courses. II. Specific Requirements: A. Prerequisite courses: 101 (5), 102 (5), 103 (5), 201 (5), 202 (5) or equivalent preparation. B. Minimum of 18 upper division credit hours for minor (23 for teaching minors). C. Courses required: 304 (3), 305 (3), 306 (3), plus any 9 upper division hours. (Spanish students may substitute 380 (5) for 304, 305, 306 plus any 13 upper division hours). D. Teaching Minors must take 330 (3) and 340 (5). 340 must be completed prior to student teaching. E. A Teaching Minor should student-teach in his language for a minimum of one quarter. F. Minors must include one literature course taught in the language. II. Program: Foreign Language Departmental Honors I. General Requirements: Enroll in General Honors and complete at least 10 hours of General Honors courses Maintain an overall G. P. A. of 3.3. Fulfill requirements for departmental or teaching majors in French, German, or Spanish. Specific Requirements: A. In fulfilling the requirements for a Foreign Language Major take at least 15 credit hours on an Honors basis. Complete a Foreign Language Senior Project. A student may receive Foreign Language Honors credit in any Foreign Language upper division course. Permission from the department chairman should be sought before registering in a course for Honors credit. A written agreement should be reached with the appropriate professor regarding the work expected for Honors credit. (See Composite and Interdepartmental Programs.) A. B. C. B. C. D. Asian Studies Minor—The Department of Foreign Languages participates in the Asian Studies Minor Program. A student who wishes to participate should indicate his desire to do so with the departmental Asian Studies representative who will help the student work out a proper combinaton of courses to fit his particular needs. FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Courses listed here have a common number and description and may be taught in any language (subject to academic and community needs, as well as to the availability of resources). Courses peculiar to French, German and Spanish are listed separately. ALL LANGUAGES 100. Folk Songs. (1) Folk songs in the target language. No prerequisite. May be repeated up to three times under different titles. 101,102,103. First Year* (5-5-5) Listening and speaking skills receive primary emphasis, although reading and writing are an integral part of the program. Courses are sequential, and the previous course is a prerequisite. 105. Language Exploration (1-5) A two-week exploration of salient characteristics of language and culture in from one to five different languages. No prerequisites. 110. Conversational Skills for Special Purposes (5) Special vocabulary and speaking skills in one quarter, (i.e., nursing, law enforcement, military, tourism, etc.) May be repeated for credit under different titles. HU201,HU202. Second Year* (5-5) Grammar and composition of intermediate level and progressively advanced reading material. Prerequisite: 103 or equivalent. 209. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history study offered on location and supervised by faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages. 292. Short Courses, Workshops, Institutes and Special Programs (1-6) In order to provide flexibility and to meet many different needs, a number of specific offerings are possible using this catalog number. When the number is used it will be accompanied by a brief and specific descriptive title. The specific title with the credit authorized for the particular offering will appear on the student transcript. HU304, HU305, HU306. Third Year' (3-3-3) Grammar review and an introduction to composition and stylistics. 309. Travel and Study Abroad (3) Language, culture and history study offered on location and supervised by faculty of the Department of Foreign Languages. HU311,HU312,HU313. Survey of Literature" (3-3-3) A general view of literary periods, movements, and social background, with representative readings.
