Summer courses must be completed with a C grade or better before entering fall quarter): Child and Family Studies 101 (3), 150 (5); Psychology 101 (5) in the Social Science area; Microbiology 115 (4) in the Life Science area. 2. Second year a. Fall: Health Sciences 130 (3); English 101 (3). b. Winter: English 102 (3); Humanities** (3). c. Spring: English 103<3), Humanities** <3), Nursing 299 (1). ♦Acceptable equivalent: Zoology 201 (5), Microbiology 111 (5), .Chemistry 101 (5) and Physics 101 '5). If students complete the acceptable equivalents of 20 hours. Microbiology 115 is not required. ••Six credit hours of Humanities is required, three hours of which must be English Literature. NURSING COURSES 101-102. Fundamentals of Nursing Care (10) This is the initial course for both associate degree nursing and practical nursing students. The content is planned to assist the student to develop fundamental skills and identify simple nursing problems related to the basic needs of people. Five lecture hours and three 5-hour labs a week. A 111-112. Needs of Adults (11> Emphasis is placed on meeting the basic human needs of patients through an increased development of nursing skills based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to common pathological processes, diagnostic procedures, and specialized equipment. The nursing process is incorporated into theory and practice. Five lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. W S 114. Level 1, Basic Pharmacology (I) This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of pharmacology as it related to nursing. Information related to biological factors affecting the action of drugs and related nursing considerations is stressed. Medication administration techniques are included. W S 121-122. Needs of the Family (12) Emphasis is placed on meeting basic human needs of the family throughout the childbearing cycle and includes the care of children. Increased development of nursing skills is based on an understanding of principles and facts relative to these aspects of the life cycle. Six lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. W S 201-202. Needs of Adults (9) Concurrent theory and guided clinical practice are incorporated in developing a knowledge of principles related to the nursing care of clients with more complex health problems. Opportunities are provided for the student to use the nursing process in the care of patients with alterations in their basic needs. Emphasis is placed on four of the seven basic needs. Four lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. A W S 211-212. Needs of Adults (8) Concurrent theory and guided clinical practice are incorporated in developing a knowledge of principles related to the nursing care of clients with more complex health problems. Level 2, Basic Pharmacology (1) Principles of pharmacology are emphasized which can be applied in planning and giving nursing care to clients with more complex deviations from health Prevention of health problems are stressed. Emphasis is placed on the nursing process as it relates to the nurses's role in drug therapy. A W S 221-222 Family Centered: 1-Needs of Maternal Child and Adolescents; 2-Emotional Needs of People (9) 1. Concurrent theory and guided clinical experience are planned to assist in the development of knowledge and skills in giving care to clients in a family-centered setting. The clients are identified as obstetric patients, children from birth to late adolescence and their families. 2. The needs and behaviors of psychiatric patients are explored as well as the roles and functions of the psychiatric nurse. The psychodynamics of basic psycho- pathological conditions are explained. Opportunities are provided for the student to utilize the nursing process in giving nursing care to the client with a psychiatric disorder. Four lecture hours and two 8-hour labs a week. Basic Coronary Care (3) Emphasis is placed on the care and treatment of clients in coronary care units, with particular emphasis on nursing skills necessary to treat patients with arrhythmias. Nursing Seminar (1) Current topics significant to the practice of nursing are discussed. Required for sophomore students.
