opment Tests of the United States Armed Forces Institute. These tests are available at the Weber State College Testing Office and in other test centers in all states of the union. Advisement—At the time of admission to Weber State College, a student is assigned a faculty advisor appropriate to his academic major. Each student is encouraged to consult with his advisor on problems of registration, changes of major, or more generally, about any educational concerns. When a student is placed on academic warning, probation or final probation, he should, in addition to limiting his registration as required by the academic regulations of the college, consult with his advisor and/or a counselor in the Student Personnel Division concerning his problem. The goals of advising are consistent with those of teaching in that they are intended to foster the development of a student's intellectual growth and his ability to make intelligent, critical judgments. Therefore, the student is expected to accept the primary responsibility in making his own informed decisions on all aspects of his college career where he has discretion. The advisor may refer the student to the Counseling Office with recommendations for personal help at any time. (See Academic Regulations.) Remedial Courses—In addition to its orientation activities, the college offers special remedial courses in English, mathematics, reading, and listening. The student who feels that he is weak in any of these areas and would like extra help should register for these courses. He should tell his advisor of this need during registration. The advisor will then help him select appropriate courses. VETERANS' SERVICE Veteran Coordinator—The Office of the Veteran Coordinator assists veterans with special problems involved in registering and training under the Public Laws which provide educational benefits. At this office the veterans may receive guidance and counseling related to the educational opportunities afforded them by the Public Laws and by the offerings of Weber State College. It is necessary that all veterans who attend Weber State College under one of the Public Laws clear through the office of the Veteran Coordinator. MILITARY SERVICE OBLIGATION AND COLLEGE DEFERMENTS All male citizens are required to register with their draft board within five days after they become eighteen years of age. They will then be mailed a registration or selective number. At eighteen and a half years they are mailed a form which they are required to fill out and return. They are subsequently given a classification. Reserve Programs'—Students may prefer to meet their obligation by joining a reserve or national guard unit. Direct contact should be made with the unit in which the student is interested. College Deferment—Deferment for college attendance is available for some. There is no action required on this, however, until one has been physically examined and qualified for service. If a student is interested in a college deferment, he should contact his draft board and arrange to supply evidence of his registration at the college to the board. To be deferred any student must be a full-time student and carry fifteen or more hours and must obtain a satisfactory grade point average. Extending one's education before he performs his military duty not only improves his capacity to serve his country but also increases his chance for advancement during his service time. FOREIGN STUDENTS' ADVISOR The Foreign Students' Advisor will confer with each foreign student on his needs and problems. He will be responsible to assign these students to such special courses as may be required to help them with their problems. He will also serve as a consultant on the admission of all foreign students. HEALTH SERVICE, POLICIES, AND PROCEDURES FOR PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS The Health Service of Weber State College has been established for the education and protection of students. The services offered are: (1) evaluation of the medical examination given by the family physician, (2) follow-up for the correction of remediable defects, (3) adequate care in case of accidents and sudden illness, (4) procedures to control communicable diseases, (5) a program of accident prevention. A medical examination is required of every student upon his initial entrance to Weber State College. Registration cannot be completed until he has filed a completed report on the official form. The college physician shall prepare the official examination form to be given each initial applicant to Weber State College. A student shall have his family physician (M.D.) give the examination and record it on the Weber State College Medical Examination Record Card. The college physician will evaluate the results of the medical examination for the guidance and protection of the students and the college. The college physician shall be the final judge of a student's physical fitness for participating in activities and for using the college facilities. 60 61
