Baccalaureate Degree Requirements The Department of Theatre Arts grants the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. Students intending to take either must complete 45 to 60 hours of satisfactory work in Theatre Arts according to the specific requirements. Two types of majors are offered: a Departmental major in Theatre Arts, and a Speech and Theatre Arts major for prospective secondary education teachers. It is recommended that students take the B.A. rather than the B.S. degree by completing 24 hours in one foreign language, provided they do not have the high school equivalent. (Two full years of high school language is equivalent to 15 quarter hours of college work.) Theatre Arts Major: Students majoring in Theatre Arts must complete 45 to 60 hours of approved lower and upper division courses including the following courses in Theatre Arts: 10, 11, 13, 14, 40, 50, 51, 52, 65, 107, 140, 150, 153, 165; English 84 or 89. To complete major requirements a student must choose also at least one course from the following: Theatre Arts 141, 154, 157, 166, 190. The following courses are recommended for majors; Theatre Arts 60, 142, 143, 151; Speech 1; English 60, 160, 164, 165. Speech and Theatre Arts Major: Students majoring in Speech and Theatre Arts must complete 45 to 60 hours of approved lower and upper division courses including the following courses in Speech: 1, 11,14, 15, 21; Theatre Arts: 10, 13, 40, 51, 60, 65, 107, 140, 153, 190. To complete major requirements a student must choose also at least one course from the following: Speech 112, 121, 122; Theatre Arts 141, 150, 165. The following courses are recommended for majors: Theatre Arts 142, 143, 150, 151; English 60, 84, 89, 160, 164, 165. Theatre Arts Minor; Students minoring in Theatre Arts must complete Theatre Arts 10, 13, 40, 51, 60, 65, 153. The following additional courses are recommended for minors: English 60, 84, 89. Speech and Theatre Arts Minor: Students minoring in Speech and Theatre Arts must complete Speech: 10, 13, 15; Theatre Arts: 40, 51, 60, 65. The following additional courses are recommended for minors: English 25, 60, 84, 89. Weber State Theatre Program Play Production—Play production at Weber State College is under the administrative guidance of the Division of Human- *On Leave 134 ities and is sponsored directly by the Department of Theatre Arts at Weber State College Theatre. Theatre Season—A season of plays is presented each year which includes offerings in both proscenium and flexible production. Plays in the proscenium theatre combine the acting talents and services of both college and community people. Those in the Cellar theatre are the result of student workshop classes and are largely devoted to educational and experimental works not available in commercial theatre. Six plays are offered each year on this season: one each quarter in the proscenium theatre and one each quarter in the Cellar theatre. Currently, during the winter quarter a musical, presented in collaboration with the Department of Music, takes the place of one winter quarter play. Other plays, prepared as an outgrowth of work in directing classes, are also presented in the Cellar theatre to invited audiences. The Weber State College Theatre summer program has recently been expanded to include a regular offering in the Fine Arts Theatre in addition to a play for children, produced in collaboration with the Ogden City and Weber County Recreation Departments, presented in parks throughout the city and county. Special activities are often included in the program such as plays prepared for tour during the spring quarter for presentation to school audiences in the Ogden and immediate area, and plays prepared for presentation at selected points over the state. THEATRE ARTS 005. Summer Theatre Workshop—Play production on laboratory basis. High school students eligible on terminal credit basis. All registration by approval of Instructor. Su (1-2). Staff 5. Theatre Appreciation—Critical appreciation and enjoyment of live theatre, motion pictures and television from an audience point of view. Designed for the nonmajor. Credit not allowed if student has satisfactorily completed Theatre Arts 40. Allows Humanities Area credit. A W S (3). Staff 8. Oral Reading—See Speech 8. 10. Voice and Diction—Mechanics of voice production and word utterance for better functioning of voice, articulation, enunciation, and pronunciation. A W (3). Rowley 11. Phonetics—See Speech 11. 13. Oral Technique—Specialized experience for oral reading techniques for the Theatre Arts and Speech major. Emphasis on preparation for performance and application to specific career areas. W (3).
