Show extra-curricular activities. The latter especially offer a wealth of opportunity for social and cultural development. Other organizations include the student government, the various student-sponsored organizations, and the Student Union. These organizations offer experience in voting, running for office, holding elective and appointive offices, and representing campus organizations and functions. Many student groups are planned and sponsored by the student-body. For example, there are many professional and honorary organizations such as the Education Club, the Engineers Club, the Geodiscipulus Club, the Musettes, the Weber State Singers, Voce Coeds, the Sociology Club, the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, the Home Economics Club, the Phi Rho Pi Chapter, a national forensic fraternity for students in debate and speech, the International Relations Club, the Gleemen's Club, the Westerners (Rodeo Club), a student chapter of American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers, the Physical Education Majors and Minors Club, the Student Association for Free-Enterprise, a Literature Club, a young Democrats Club and a Young Republicans Club. The service clubs include Whip for women students, and Circle K and Blue Key for men. Social clubs include Excelsior, Phoenix, and Sigma Delta Pi for men; La Dianaeda, Otyokwa, Sharmea, and Takai Kyoto for women. The Weber State College Union was built to provide a suitable place for out-of-class activities. Its several committees help promote luncheons, dances, games, meetings, musicals, concerts, hobbies, movies, and dramatic presentations. Other important activities are those department-sponsored events contributing significantly to the educational development of all students. The Departments of Art, Business, English, and Photography plan and sponsor student publications. The Department of English Language and Literature and the Department of Speech and Drama plan and sponsor student publications, debating, extempore and impromptu speaking, oratory, interpretative speech, drama, and radio. The Department of Music plans and sponsors opera, oratorio, choir, and ensemble singing as well as orchestra, band, choral, and instrumental activities. The Department of Physical Education plans and sponsors m- tramurals, intercollegiate football, basketball, swimming, wrestling, boxing, skiing, tennis, track, and field sports which are designed to develop in the participant the qualifies of initiative, physical fitness, and good sportsmanship; to teach self-control, team and school loyalty, and coopera tion ; and to provide stimulating recreation for students, faculty, and people of the community. Many college and community activities are planned and sponsored jointly as follows: 1. Ogden Community-Weber State College Concert Series. 2. Weber State College Lecture Series. 3. Weber State College Theatre. 4. Ogden Community-Weber State College Symphony Orchestra. 5. Weber State College-Ogden Symphonic Choir. 6. Community Physical Education Program. 7. Community Service Bureau. This bureau provides programs and speakers for various community organizations. 8. Weber State College High School Debate Tournaments for secondary students from Utah and surrounding states. 9. Regional Science Fair for secondary students sponsored by Weber State College science departments cooperating with the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. Awards—The College supports a system of awards to stimulate participation in out-of-class activities, to encourage maximum achievement in a student's chosen field, and to recognize and promote outstanding services to the College. Awards are granted for leadership, service, and achievement on four levels: exceptional, outstanding, meritorious, and commendable. Recommendations for awards are made by the instructional departments through the division heads and are directed to the Awards and Honors Committee, composed of faculty and student representatives. Contributing also to the achievement of College objectives are the following programs: Weber State College Evening School—The Evening School serves the needs of the adults and youth of the Ogden area who desire courses for personal improvement or who wish to increase their skills for occupational efficiency. It also serves those students who find it expedient to attend evening classes instead of day classes. Classes are held from 6 p.m. to 10 pm. Monday through Thursday. The counseling service of the day school is available to students of the evening school.
