Change in Graduation Requirements—Students who are not graduated with the class with which they entered are held to the requirements applicable to the class with which they are graduated. Application for Graduation—A candidate for the bachelor degree must file a written application for graduation obtained at the Registrar's Office during Spring Quarter of his junior year. Each applicant will receive a written report on his standing for graduation upon which to plan the work for his senior year. A candidate for the title of Associate in Arts or Science, or for the Certificate of Completion or for the Certificate of Proficiency must file a written application for graduation with the Registrar's Office not later than the sixth week of the Autumn Quarter. Applications will not be considered within the last few weeks before Commencement, unless special permission is given by the Registrar. A candidate for graduation must pay his graduation fee at the Cashier's Office within the second we*»k of the Winter Quarter. A candidate is required to be present at Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises unless excused by his Division Chairman and the President of the college. Application for such excuse should be addressed in writing to the appropriate division chairman. Honors at Graduation—A candidate who has completed requirements for graduation at Weber State College and whose ratio in all registered work is not less than 3.8 is awarded high honors (magna cum laude): a student whose ratio in all his registered work is not less than S.4 is awarded honors (cum laude). The names of students winning high honors and honors are published in the Commencement Program, and elsewhere, as the President may direct. Honors for Commencement are determined during the Spring Quarter and do not reflect final grades for that quarter. Payment of Fees—The student must have cleared all college financial obligations. REQUIREMENTS FOR BACHELOR OF ARTS AND BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREES Minimum Requirements—A candidate for graduation with a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science Degree must have completed a minimum of 183 credits. Upper Division Requirement—A minimum of 60 credits of upper division work. Major Requirements—A major in any one department will consist of not fewer than 40 and not more than 60 credits in the major field. 46 Minor Requirements—A minor consists of not fewer than 20 credits. Courses designed primarily for the major students which are also used to satisfy the area requirements as outlined under area requirements can be used as part of the minimum number of hours needed for the minor requirements. See Division or Department for specific minor requirements. Residence Requirement—A candidate for graduation must have a minimum of 45 credits in residence at Weber State College and be registered at the college during at least one quarter following the last commencement prior to his graduation. Division Requirements—Further information concerning specific courses will be provided under the discussion of division requirements and instructions. Candidates for graduation in the Division of Education must meet the minimum requirements as outlined by the Utah State Board of Education for certification of elementary and secondary teachers. Bachelor of Arts Requirement—A candidate for a Bachelor of Arts degree must complete 24 credits, or the equivalent, in one approved foreign language. High school or transfer credit from another institution may count toward fulfilling this requirement provided the student can pass an examination or demonstrate in some other satisfactory manner his knowledge of the subject. Second Baccalaureate Degree—A student may qualify for a second baccalaureate degree by completing one full year of work in addition to that required for his first degree. He must complete all the requirements of the division from which he will receive his new degree. Specific Course Requirements All candidates must include in the 183 credits the following courses: Credits* English 1, 2, 3 (Freshman Composition) 9 Orientation 1 or equivalent 2 Health Education 1 2 Physical Education (Students 30 years or over exempt) 3 (For specified activities see Physical Education Division) Area Requirements A student may satisfy the general education requirements by completing a minimum of 40 credit hours in the four areas of Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. At least 9 credit hours, but not more than 12 credit hours in one area will be counted toward this requirement. In addition, women students are required to complete one approved course in the department of Family Living. *The term "Credits" means quarter hour credits in this catalog. 47
