SERVICES OF THE COLLEGE STUDENT PERSONNEL SERVICES The development and coordination of Student Personnel Services is the responsibility of the Dean of Students. Under his direction, needed policies and procedures for student personnel are developed and recommended to the President and the Administrative Council. Those in charge of carrying out these assignments include: Merle E. Allen, Dean of Students; Alan J. Dayley, Dean of Men; Mrs. Marva H. Gregory, Dean of Women; Ralph D. Mars- den, Director of Counseling and Testing; Sterling K. Gerber, Director of Scholastic Standards; Dee W. Flitton, Director of Placement; James D. Condie, Director of Housing; J. Farrell Shepherd, Director of the Weber State College Union; and Dean Black, Union Program Director. COUNSELING SERVICE Counseling—The following services are coordinated through the Weber State College Counseling service: (1) coun- elsing with vocational, educational, and personal problems; (2) testing; (3) advisement. The objective of the Counseling Service is to assist the student to make intelligent decisions regarding his vocational, academic, and personal needs. Any student who desires assistance may visit with a counselor prior to his first registration to help him in a choice of major and in making other educational plans. Special help is available during August and September. Call the Counseling Service for an appointment. Testing—Each Freshman is required to take the American College Test prior to registration. The ACT measures the four areas of English, mathematics, natural science, and social studies. (For details see Admission Requirements.) The Testing Office also gives aptitude, interest, personality and achievement tests as recommended by the deans or counselors. In addition high school transcripts and ACT scores are kept on file at the Testing Office for the use of advisers and counselors. An adult student who has not completed high school requirements is required to take the General Educational Development Tests of the United States Armed Forces Institute. These tests are available at the Weber State College Testing Office and in other test centers in all states of the union. Advisement—At the time of admission to Weber State College, a student is assigned a faculty adviser appropriate to his academic major. Each student is encouraged to consult with his adviser on problems of registration, changes of major, or more 57
