Show Baccalaureate Degree Requirements Candidates for the B.A. or the B.S. degree must complete at, least 183 hours of work. At least 60 of the 183 hours must be upper division courses. Music Major To satisfy requirements for the baccalaureate degree with a music major, the student shall complete courses as listed. Requirements may be modified, to meet individual needs. An academic minor is required. The B.A. degree is recommended. It is recommended that each student complete 25 hours in either German or French, or 15 hours in each. All candidates must acquire practical skill at the piano. This requirement is also a prerequisite for courses 21 and 22, and all courses listed under Music Theory. Each student must be a member of a performing group each quarter, such as choir, band or orchestra. One solo recital is required of each candidate for the music major, to be presented during the senior year. All courses in applied music may be repeated for credit. Not more than 5 hours of private instruction may count toward the applied music requirement. Each student electing the music major program is expected to attend all departmental concerts and recitals, all Community Concert events, and all concerts given by the Utah State Symphony. The following courses are required: Music History and Literature (9 hours): Music 7, 8, 9, or 107, 108, 109. Music Education (6 hours): Music 21 or 22; select 4 different courses from Music 24, 25, 26, 27 or 28. (Those students whose previous training lies in vocal music should emphasize instrumental workshops in their selections and vice versa.) Applied Music (15 hours): Select from the following, with guidance from the department: Music 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 53, 55, 60, 66, 140, 143, 144, 145, 150, 155, 160. Music Theory (28 hours): Music 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 173, 174, 175, 179, 180, 190. Music Minor The following courses are recommended, but may be modified by the Music Department to meet individual needs of students: 142 Music Theory (15 hours): Music 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75. Applied Music (5 hours): Select from Music 40, 50 or 60. Music Education (3 hours): Music 120 or 130. All students electing the music minor must acquire practical skill at the piano. This requirement is also a prerequisite lor all Music Theory courses. In addition, the student shall have completed the course in either Music 5, 7, 8, or 9, to satisfy area requirements in the Humanities Division. Additional elective courses are offered by the department. Composite Music Education Major To satisfy requirements for the baccalaureate degree with a Composite Music Education Major, the student shall complete the courses as outlined. This curriculum is recommended for those preparing to teach music in the public schools. Requirements may be modified to meet individual needs. No academic minor is required. All candidates must acquire practical skill at the piano. This requirement is also a prerequisite for courses 21 and 22, and all courses listed under Music Theory.
