Show Ted Black, fire marshal for the Weber Fire District, would like to see an ordinance requiring that fire sprinklers be installed in all new homes built throughout the county. Currently our code requires sprinklers in a home which is over 3600 square feet, including the garage, in areas of low water flow. Residents were reminded that the Building and Fire Codes require that all houses have an address posted. If there is no address on the home or mail box, it is possible that in the event of an emergency, the family and property might be at risk. Beginning in August, The Pioneer Post was delivered with the Bona Vista Water District new full page bill. The water company is allowing each community it serves to insert its newsletter with the bill, a great service to the city. With all the problems, solved or unresolved, did we have time for fun and recreation in Marriott-Slaterville as a community? Some outstanding events were held, the biggest being our Independence Day Celebration. Mrs. Brad Slater (Pam) again served as Chair. The golf tournament was under the direction of Danny Brown. Darren DeVries was in charge of the July 3rd activities at the Slaterville Park and the parade. The first activity was the Fifth Annual Golf Tournament on July 2nd. Get Teed-off was held at Mulligans Golf Course beginning at 4:30 p.m., with about 100 people entered in the tournament. Festivities continued with a Dutch Oven dinner at the Slaterville Park on July 3rd starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by karaoke. About 250 people attended. An 8:00 a.m. breakfast was held in both the Marriott and Slaterville parks on July 4th Then a great parade started at 11:00 a.m., headed by sheriff deputies on motorcycles. It began on 700 South and continued along 1200 West to the Marriott Park. There were lots of bicycles, tricycles, wagons, antique cars, and innovative floats. The "infamous" float, Myrna's Pool Babes, provided lots of grins along the route, and won the first place prize. Events concluded at the Marriott Park, with lunch, contests, and games throughout the afternoon, with many residents enjoying the day with family and friends. Mrs. Pam Slater was presented with a floral arrangement at the Council meeting held on July 17, in appreciation of the time and effort she invested in making the celebration so successful. The Parks and Recreation Division provided the opportunity of tennis lessons this summer with well-qualified Steven Ito as the instructor. Senior citizens were offered free lessons. We knew it was summer when special activities for residents began. The first of three scheduled musical events, An Evening of Music at the Park was held on June 9, 2003, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Marriott Park. James Elmer acted as Master of Ceremonies. Featured were Bob Hirschi, a Slaterville Primary Choir, Karen Mecham, and The Pastels Plus. June Meyerhoffer and Pearl Stanger shared memories of "the old days" with the audience. A sing-along of old favorites was led by Buzzy Ito. The second Evening of Music at the Park was held on July 7th at the Marriott Park. It featured Michelle Woolf on the Celtic Harp. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear such a rare instrument. August 4th was the final Evening of Music at the Park for this summer. Featured performers were the No Name Band, Kaitlyn and Dallin Holley, and Shawn Holley. We are fortunate to have so much talent in our community. Thanks goes to all who shared their talent in these fun and entertaining musical evenings. A special event for older citizens was held on August 20th at the Slaterville Park. A dinner, catered by Melina's Mexican Restaurant, was enjoyed by those who admitted being "more mature" by their attendance. Shauna Meyerhoffer led a look back in time, as memories were shared of the two communities which became one. The annual Christmas party for the council, staff, the many volunteers, and their partners began at 7:00 p.m. on December 18, 2003, at the city office. Excellent food from Maddox and visiting made an enjoyable evening for the guests. We were indebted to Shauna Meyerhoffer, her husband Glen, and all those who helped make the party a special holiday evening. Paraphrasing, "it takes a heap of working to make a city great." Many people helped in special ways this past year, and some were honored for their work. |
