Pub.: October 22, 2003 14489 Absentee votes may decide tie By JESUS LOPEZ JR. Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - The final results of the City Council primary election may hinge on absentee ballots or the flip of a coin. Ned Allred, 53, and Kent Meyerhoffer, 53, each received 61 votes in a tie for the second of two spots on the No-vember general election ballot. Friday is the deadline for counting all absentee ballots. Scott Vanleeuwen, 60, who is also running for the at-large seat, did not have to worry about ties. He secured his position on the general election ballot with 87 votes. L. Kent Slater was eliminated with 28 votes. Utah Director of Elections Amy Naccarato said if there is still a tie after counting the absentee ballots, under Utah codes the winner will be decided by lots. That must be done within five days at the next public meeting. Naccarato's office said the tie-breaker could be anything from a flip of a MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE COUNCIL PRIMARY coin to a name drawn from a hat. "It's pretty rare, but I know it has happened in the past," Naccarato said. "That's why they wrote something in to the state law to take care of this situation." If the tie still exists after the absentee ballots are counted, the decision on how the tie will be broken is up to city administrator Bill Morris. The city has not yet decided what course of action to take yet. "It will be interesting to see how it's handled," Meyerhoffer said. "Ned is a good person, I've known him all of my life, so who better to be tied with then him?" The Seat C general election will pit incumbent Rob Smout, who received 87 votes, against Robert Devries, who re-ceived 30 votes. Jay Miller was eliminated with six votes. October 8, 2003 |
