Show "He's one of the greatest men I know. I would take lessons from Brad Slater any day of the week." - Davis County Sheriff Bud Cox Peers honor Weber's sheriff BRIAN NICHOLSON/Standard-Examiner Weber County Sheriff Brad Slater (left) talks with MIS Director Richard Howe on Friday about a new system called "Digital Patroller" at the Sheriff's Office in Ogden. Slater was named "Sheriff of the Year" in Utah by his peers. Modest Slater insists many deserve honor By MARK GRAY Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN - Although humbled and appreciative, Weber County Sheriff Brad Slater is undeserving of the state's most prestigious award among elected sheriff's... or so he thinks. His peers, however, have no doubts he is the man deserving of the "Sheriff of the Year" title he recently re-ceived at the Utah Sheriff's Association's annual banquet after it was voted on by 28 elected lawmen. Then, Salt Lake County Sheriff Aaron Kennard nominated Slater at the banquet saying, "This guy has given more to the sheriff's association than you could ever think about." The motion was quickly seconded, mainly thanks to Slater's consistent lobbying of the state Legislature on behalf of the association. "There were guys a lot more deserving than me," Slater said modestly. "There are a lot of sheriffs that do a lot of good work." Even when bringing up projects like the $24 million Weber County Jail, a project he basically headed, he dishes credit to an ad hoc committee. When bringing up the fact his office is cluttered with awards like Utah's "lawman of the year" and medals for his work during the 2002 October 7, 2003 67 |
