Still too close to call State 5-A, 3-A tennis tournaments tight after first day By MARK WATSON_ Standard-Examiner correspondent SALT LAKE CITY - Skyline, Viewmont and Brighton are still in the chase for a state 5-A tennis title after the first two rounds of play at Liberty Park on Friday. Skyline won all 10 of its opening matches and finished with 10 points, Viewmont is second with nine points and Brighton scored eight team points. Top of Utah teams Davis and Fremont scored four points each during the first two rounds and Layton tallied two points. Two Top of Utah players are still alive in the tournament. Fremont's No. 2 singles player, Travis Thompsen, won two matches on Friday. Thompsen breezed past an opponent from Granger in the opening round and then survived a three-setter in the second round to advance to the semifinals. In the second round Thompsen defeated Nick Dall of Brighton 6-0, 6-7, 6-0. Thompsen, who finished second at No. 2 singles a year ago, will face Skyline's Chris Holman today at 9 a.m. The other Top of Utah player to advance to the semifinals was Layton's John Schuman at No. 3 singles. After an easy opening round, Shuman found a little more resistance in the second round but prevailed 6-4, 6-3 over Kearns' Jeremy Dudar. Schuman is scheduled to face Brighton's Tanner Esplin today in the semifinals. |
