Show First mention probably should be made of an honor to our city. On May 15, 2003, it was honored as a Tree City USA, by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the year 2002. This program recognizes communities that have proven their commitment to an effective, ongoing community forestry program. Our city is one of only 35 communities in the state that have received this award. Mr. Brook Lee congratulated the city and presented Mayor Keith Butler with a plaque from The National Arbor Day Foundation. The plaque now hangs in the Council Room at the office. Members of the Parks Committee were presented individual plaques by Mr. Jim Ito, on February 20. They expended a lot of time and performed much research and assessment in developing suggestions for River Cove Park. Scott Van Leeuwen and Carolyn Deru each donated a new flag to the city this year. In June, Slaterville Cub Scouts Jonathan Spencer and Cody Sandburg, with leaders Bart Spencer and Brian Cutler, conducted a ceremony to retire an old worn flag and replaced it with one of the new flags. Mayor Butler commended the excellent work by Bill Morris, Becky Syme, and Jen Okey in creating a display representing our community at the August Weber County Fair. The theme was The Weber River in MSC. At the council meeting on October 16th, Darrell Mecham received the Mayor's Volunteer of the Month Community Service Award for the month of October. What a great citizen of our community this man is! His service to the community has been outstanding. He has performed countless hours of labor on the River Cove Park. He moved the flag pole from the old city office to the new office, and donated the flag pole to the city. He took more than seven tons of weeds and debris gathered by the community service inmate detail to the land fill. As noted before, he paid the dumping fee, and would not accept reimbursement. During the presentation, the Mayor also thanked Mrs. Norine Mecham for mending a rip in the flag which had been damaged in a wind storm. Mr. Mecham, in thanking everyone for his award and ever thinking of our city, encouraged the community to take weeds and branches to the land fill to help keep the community clean. Mayor Butler presented Elna Lucas with the Volunteer of the Month Community Service Award for November for her service as Historian for the city. We bask in reflected glory when our residents are honored for achievements not connected with the city. In April, Heather Holley was presented a proclamation for her achievements as the Utah Dairy Princess, by Mayor Keith Butler. We are certainly proud of Kevin Slater and Billy Green, two of our young residents. They were among 300 Utah students who traveled to Moscow, Russia, to participate in the Moscow-Utah Youth Summer Games, held from July 16th through July 28th. Billy won a gold medal and Kevin won a silver medal in wrestling, one of the 10 sporting categories. Heather Milne, while still at Rocky Mountain Junior High, swam on the Fremont High School team, and was lettered in that sport. Todd Spencer was the Elks Club January Student of the Month. Not to be outdone, younger sister Erin Spencer received the same award for December. Travis Thompsen was named to the 2002-03 Standard-Examiner All-area Boys Basketball Team. Also, he was the regional tennis champion and placed second in the State tournament. Megan Hirschi took second place in a recent state tennis tournament. Lindsay Slater was one of the stars of the Girls Cross Country Team from Fremont High School, who won the State Championship on October 22, 2003. She received a 9th place medal in the Footlocker Western United States 5K Run. Kylee Deru was selected Silver Wolf for Social Studies at Fremont High School for November. In December, Aubrey Dimick earned a chair in the Weber School District Honor Orchestra. Todd Spencer and Tyson Heslington's Power Stroke Band won first place in the Battle of the Bands at Fremont High School, and took second place in the Standard Examiner sponsored Battle of the Bands, competing with bands from Box Elder, Weber, and Davis Counties. Sherry Morris and Joe Deru were among those who received the Standard Examiner's Apple for the Teacher Award. Debbie DeVries received the 2003 Woman of Achievement Award from the Ogden Business and Professional Women's Club. She also is a member of the Weber County Fair Board. Joe Deru was a |
