Show City Meetings Reported in the November Issue of The Weber Sentinel Marriott-Slaterville By Joyce VanTassell Community service award City council opened their meeting on Oct. 16 with the pledge of allegiance. Mayor Keith Butler gave a Community Service Award to Mr. Darrell Mecham, who was commended for his numerous efforts to beautify the community. The mayor cited Mr. Mecham's efforts in cleaning the streets, taking multiple loads of garbage to the landfill at his own expense, and providing a flagpole for the city, as well as other helpful civic activities. Primary election tie broken After receiving input from the two candidates, the city decided to draw lots to break the tie in this month's primary election between Ned Allred and Kent Meyerhoffer. Although ties are unusual, state law calls for ties to be broken by drawing lots or tossing a coin. City administrator Bill Morris commented that "it's probably one of the few legalized forms of gambling in the state of Utah." Orvil Holley, who is retiring from the disputed seat, drew a name out of a hat. Elections officer Becky Birt announced the winner - Kent Meyerhoffer. He will now run against Scott VanLeeuwen in the November elections. Incumbent Rob Smout will face Robert DeVries, and Gerald Bischoff will run against council President Dennis Ilium. Citizen's Advisory Board Sheriff's Deputy Lowther spoke to the city council about plans to appoint a citizen's advisory board to help the police be more aware of citizens' concerns. Planning commission Subdivisions given preliminary approval The proposed Quail Meadows subdivision (1901 S. 1200 W.) dominated the Oct. 8 meeting of the Marriott-Slaterville planning commission. Mr. Ken Holman, spokesman for Dr. Imani and Mr. Doug Woolf, presented a list of 25 requirements they had been asked to meet at August's planning commission meeting. The commission listened and expressed satisfaction with all but two details. One concern was that there were no swamps in the development as required by the federal EPA, and another that the secondary water system might not be adequate and workable for the development. Preliminary approval was reluctantly granted for the subdivision, with final approval depending on the clarification of these two points. Several commission members complimented Mr. Holman on his work to meet their requirements. They also expressed regret at the change the subdivision heralds for the rural character of Marriott-Slaterville, but noted that they had helped set up the city plan and this proposed subdivision met all legal requirements. Preliminary approval was also given to a small, 4-lot subdivision called Big "W" that is being planned by James and Cathleen Williamson at 2449 W. Pioneer Rd. |
