Show Travis Thompsen Named to All-Area First Team April 21, 2003 14-member team boasts Bees, Wolves Two-time selections include Dykster, Hadley and Quayle By DENNIS LARSEN_ Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN - State 4-A runner-up Box Elder and Region 1 champion Fremont High School lead the list of players selected to the 2002-03 Standard-Examiner All-Area Boys Basketball Team. The Region 4 champion Bees (8-2, 18-7 overall), who lost to Timpview in the 3-A championship game last month in the Dee Events Center, placed two players - power forward Corey Kaminska and shooting guard Jared Quayle - on the 14-member first team. The Silver Wolves (10-2, 16-7), who claimed the school's first league boys basketball title while advancing to the state 5-A quarterfinals, had point guard Beau Hadley and shooting guard Travis Thompsen named to the All-Area first team. The All-Area Team, a combined team of players from the state's 5-A, 4-A, 3-A and 1-A ranks, is chosen after consultation with the area's 16 boys head basketball coaches in the newspaper's four-county - Box Elder, Davis, Morgan and Weber - circulation area. Teams' won-loss records, both in league play and overall, plus state tournament showings factor heavily into the final All-Area Team selection process. Ogden High power forward Trent Dykster joins Hadley and Quayle as a two-time All-Area Team selection. Dykster was the Tigers' most valuable player this season as selected by his teammates. Quayle was the Bees' co-most valuable player along with Kaminska as chosen by the Box Elder coaches. The remaining first-team selections include point guard Lyman Bangerter of Layton Christian, center Cameron Cook of Bonneville, point guard Corey Doolan of Ben Lomond, center Brody Flint of Layton and small forward/power forward Kasey Kennington of Northridge. Also, power forward/center Kolby Kimbal of Region 11 champion Morgan (8-2, 11-13), shooting guard Marc Lasater of Roy, power forward Rand Sargent of Davis and point guard/shooting guard Jason Zundel of Bear River. This season's All-Area Team marks the debut of a second team, with 14 players earning second-team honors. Zundel is the only underclassman on the All-Area Team, which features 13 seniors. Travis Thompsen School: Fremont Year: Senior Position: Shooting guard Height: 6-foot-1 Notable numbers: Thompsen, a two-year starter, averaged a team-leading 12.7 points (season-high 26 vs. Roy) shooting 45 percent from the floor - 47 percent on 3-point attempts (52 3s) - and 77 percent at the free-throw line. He also averaged 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals for the Silver Wolves (16-7 overall), who advanced to the state 5-A quarterfinals. Coach Bernie Graziano's comments: "Travis can flat-out shoot it. He is the best '2' that I've coached at Fremont and the best perimeter shooter that I've coached here. Travis' physical stature is deceiving; he plays bigger and is stronger than he looks. He has so much determination to get the job done. Travis plays to win and is so relentless. We wanted him shooting the ball when he was open; the numbers speak for themselves. Travis played really good defense; he was a cat. It's rare for a '2' guard to get five rebounds a game, but Travis was a gamer. He spent so much time in the off-season shooting the ball. Travis has a great work ethic." |
