Show Another State Championship for Fremont's Girls Cross Country Team Lindsey Slater is One of the Stars October 23, 2003 Wolves howl over fourth straight title By JUSTIN JOHNSON_ Standard-Examiner correspondent SALT LAKE CITY - It might not be a full moon tonight, but if you hear a little howling coming from western Weber County, don't be alarmed. After all, the Fremont Silver Wolves have plenty to celebrate. Utilizing the strength of four super sophomores, the Fremont High girls cross county team swept its fourth consecutive state championship on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High School, topping Region 1 rival Davis 59-73. The win is the Silver Wolves' third straight at the state 5-A level, with their first in 2000 coming in 4-A. "It feels really good to have been able to come down here and win the championship as a team," Fremont's No. 1 runner Lexie Meyer said. "I was much happier winning the team trophy than I would've been winning the individual medal." Meyer finished fourth in the 5-A meet, with a time of 19:14.8. Northridge's Stacie Lifferth was the top finisher from the Top of Utah area, coming in with a time of 19:06.4 to finish third. Kit Zeigle, a junior from Bingham, won the race with a time of 18:30.3. Fremont's Cassie Ricks, Katie Chugg, Lindsey Slater and Sunnie Hansen finished sixth, 11th, 14th and 24th respectively. "I was nice to be able to come down here and win this meet," Fremont coach Art Hansen said. "We had a good run at region, but that was a fast course. This is a very hilly course, and with it being 86 degrees, I was a little nervous." Davis' top runner was junior Shaylee Marler, who finished seventh in the meet, while Lynette Purdy, Corrine Smith, Rebecca Shepard and Allison Payne finished ninth, 12th, 18th and 27th.
