Show Saved from the glue factory ROBERT JOHNSON/Standard-Exa Karen Stubblefield kisses a young colt at her Marriott-Slaterville home Friday. Stubblefield makes it a practice to save horses from death at the slaughterhouse and works to place the horses in good homes. Horsewoman rescues horses from slaughterhouse By JaNAE FRANCIS_ Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - When Karen Stubblefield enters any corral on the Pioneer Farm she manages, the animal rushes to meet her. The two snuggle before she goes on with her tasks. "Somebody loves you, huh," she says to the last horse she bought, a scruffy-looking quarter horse. 'Yeah, somebody loves you." Ranchers find alternative ways to make a living and other local stories inside in WestX. The horse cuddles more with Stubblefield. And it's no wonder. When she found him, he was very thin and only days away from the 1,000-mile ride to the meat factory. Stubblefield has saved horses from slaughter for 15 years. In all, she guesses she's kept 140 horses from French hamburgers or dog food. "She's like the 'Schindler's List' person for horses," said Sandy Crosland, who with her husband owns The Pioneer Horse Farm. Stubblefield's work as a teacher of students with behavioral problems and her efforts to expose these students to the horses she saves earned her recognition last year from Ogden City Schools. She was named as a heroic teacher. "There aren't a lot of people who would take that kind of risk Crosland said of Stubblefield's efforts to save horses. "The fac that she's willing to do it really has changed a lot of lives." Organized programs to save horses from slaughterhouses have made national headlines |
