Show July 2003 July arrived with a great beginning in our annual Fourth of July Events. The first activity was the Fifth Annual Golf Tournament on July 2* Get Teed-off was held at Mulligans Golf Course beginning at 4:30 p.m., and about 100 people entered the tournament. Festivities continued with a Dutch Oven dinner at the Slaterville Park on July 3rd starting at 6.30 p.m., followed by Karaoke. About 250 people attended. An 8:00 a.m. breakfast was held in both the Marriott and Slaterville parks on July 4th. Then a great parade beginning at 11:00 a.m. really got activities rolling. The parade, headed by sheriff deputies on motorcycles, began on 700 South and continued along 1200 West to the Marriott Park. There were lots of bicycles, tricycles, wagons, antique cars, and innovative floats. The "eyebrow-raising" float, Myrna's Pool Babes, provided lots of grins along the route, and won the first place prize. Events concluded at the Marriott Park, with lunch, contests, and games throughout the afternoon, with many residents in attendance. Mrs. Pam Slater was presented with a floral arrangement at the Council meeting held on July 17. In presenting it, Mayor Butler expressed his and the council's appreciation for her time and effort in making the July 4th celebration such a successful event. The second Evening of Music at the Park was held on July 7th at the Marriott Park. It featured Michelle Woolf on the Celtic Harp. All in attendance enjoyed the beautiful music. Several road projects were undertaken this summer. Tomlinson Road (1200 West), from Wahlquist Jr. High School to 12th Street, and 700 South from 1200 West to the end of the asphalt, will both be chipped and sealed. A small portion of West 17th street near the Slaterville Diversion Dam will be upgraded, with the asphalt being widened to accommodate a trail which will be lined by cement barriers to help reduce dumping problems. Two minor lot subdivisions were approved, the Gerald F. Taylor Family Trust Subdivision on 200 South 2250 West, and the Buck Subdivision, 2855 W. Pioneer Road, which added one lot. The City Council approved the 2002-03 amended budget and the new 2003-04 budget. An amended interlocal agreement with the Weber County Animal Shelter, including fees and costs, was adopted by resolution. A resolution approving an interlocal agreement with the Weber Area Council of Governments (WACOG) was also passed. The purposes of WACOG include: to foster, coordinate and recommend policies, plans, and priorities for transportation, including mass transportation within the county, coordinate plans on water supply, land use, housing, and local recreational and open space issues, allocations of funding for municipalities from WACOG, and its recommendations on issues. Weber County Sheriff Brad Slater explained the plans for traffic planning for the fair grounds to Mayor Butler. The County will keep the impact on the city roads as low as possible during the duration of the fair. They will enforce no parking on 1200 West, and deputies will direct traffic into the fair grounds. America First Credit Union will allow the city to post its meeting agendas in their new 12th Street building. Previously unknown drain ditches around D. J. Nursery flooded during a recent storm because the opening was overgrown. Also, what pipe was located there was not large enough and had become plugged over the years of use. A rooter company cleaned the clogged pipes and the drain is now functioning well. |
