Show Report of City Meetings Published in the October Issue of The Weber Sentinel Marriott-Slaterville planning commission By Joyce VanTassell Marriott-Slaterville City planning commission meeting was held Sept. 10. One matter dominated the evening meeting, a proposed commercial development and access road. Mr. Frank Blair proposes to put in an access road near 400 North and I-15, where he plans to develop his property for commercial use. UDOT engineer Tim Boschert advised the council of the considerations used by the Utah Department of Transportation when new roads are added, showing how businesses and roads can slow down a main thoroughfare's driving speed. He also explained that intersections needed a certain amount of space for reaction time by drivers, and that businesses whose access road was too close to the intersection led to increased accidents. He urged the commission to plan ahead for the future, when 400 North and Pioneer Road will be more heavily traveled. Mr. Blair spoke about how many times the council had heard his requests for development of his property, and how often he had heard differing estimates about the length of pavement needed at an intersection for reaction time of drivers. He commented that man y busier roads had much smaller turn-lane lengths and measurements than were recommended by Mr.Boschert and Mr. Paul Taylor, who are advising the city about the intersection in question. The commission discussed the road in question, which has an 'S' curve on it. They agreed that there was no ideal way to add a road to Mr. Blair's property without it requiring some compromise of recommended distances. The commission discussed the balance they wanted to reach between allowing Mr. Blair to develop his property versus public safety on the road. After much discussion, the commission decided to table the application pending more information. They planned to meet at the site so that they could better understand the positioning of the proposed access road. Mr. Blair and his engineer asked for a list they could use to answer the questions of the commission.
