Show Preserving rural character a top priority By JESUS LOPEZ JR. Standard-Examiner staff MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE - The two incumbents and one city council newcomer pledge to preserve the city's rural atmosphere. About 44 percent of the city's registered voters cast ballots Tuesday, re-electing Dennis Ilium and Rob Smout. Scott VanLeeuwen also won, taking the seat left vacant by Orvil Holley. Ilium, current council president, received 141 votes to serve again in Seat A. "I feel relieved that it's over and pleased with the result," Ilium said. "I'm just going to try to continue the trends that we started. There's still a few things we have to do." Ilium said some roads need to be improved and there are some ordinances the council must rework. Seat C incumbent Rob Smout, 39, who works for AT&T Corp., received 132 votes. VanLeeuwen, 60, owner of the Gift House in Ogden, received 226 votes to win the at-large seat. Seat A challenger Gerald Bischoff received 54 votes, Seat C challenger Robert Devries received 48 votes and at-large candidate Kent Meyerhoffer received 150 votes.
