Ogden Standard Examiner THURSDAY EVENING; FEBRUARY 12, 1953 Lincoln In Utah History Just as Abraham Lincolns birthday has special significance for Utah State Agricultural College because President Lincoln in 1862 signed the act creating the land grant college system in the United States, so does his birthday have special significance for the entire state. For example, President Lincoln signed on July 1, 1862, the Pacific Railroad Act the expressed intention of which was to aid in the construction of a railroad and telegraph line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean and to secure to the Government the use of the same for postal, military and other purposes. Lincolns encouragement of the construction of the railroad which was to speed the development and the prosperity of Utah was based upon his solemn knowledge that the so called Pacific Railroad was an essential instrument of national policy to further unite and strengthen the nation then combatting the theory that secession was legitimae. Utah history must also take significant note of Lincolns recall of Johnstons army from Utah which paved the way for Utahns to acquire at public auction for 100,000 the four million dollars worth of supplies belonging to the Federal military expedition. Historians agree that this windfall of goods caused an immediate economic spurt. Development of transcontinental telegraph lines also had President Lincolns blessing which hastened construction so that on October 24, 1861, the Pacific Telegraph Company placed Great Salt Lake City in telegraphic communication with eastern states and two days later the Overland Company linked the Mormon capital with San Francisco. Yes, there are events in Utahs early history which cause special significance to be attached to the observance of Abraham Lincolns birthday, but the real significance of the anniversary is identical for Utah and the rest of the nation. It is the continuous and ever expanding appreciation of the people for his life, character, humanity and love of country expressed in the carved inscription on the wall of his monument in Washington which proclaims: In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.
