TUESDAY EVENING, JANUARY 27, 1953 The Law of the Stop Sign A friend who does a lot of walking reports that he observes many violations of the law pertaining to stop signs. He wonders if motorists are fully educated about the law. The law is short and simple. It says: Every driver of a vehicle shall stop at such sign (stop sign) or at a clearly marked stop line before entering an intersection except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic control signal. The valued Utah Drivers Handbook describes nine other conditions under which the laws say we must bring our car to a full stop. They are: Stop when coming onto a street or highway from an alley, a private drive, a private road or from a building. Where there are stop signs at railway, crossings, stop more than 10 feet away from the tracks and do not go ahead until you can see that all is clear. At railway crossings where wigwag or flashing signals, gates or watchman show that a train is coming, stop more than 10 feet (but not more than 50 feet) away and wait until the train has passed or until the way is clear. Stop back of an interurban train or streetcar which is taking on or letting off passengers, until the passengers have reached safety (except at safety zones which you may go by carefully). Stop whenever there is a flashing red traffic signal. This means exactly the same as a stop sign. Whenever there is a steady red traffic light, stop and remain stopped until it turns green, except that a right turn may be made after bringing your car to a complete stop unless official sign or signal directs otherwise. Wherever there is a yellow signal, stop if you can before getting into the intersection. Stay at the scene of any accident in which you may be involved as driver, until you have done all you should. Stop upon request of any police or other peace officer at any time. Those rules are not hard to remember and none of us has an excuse for failing to obey them.
