Standing guard over 40 snow shrouded corpses doesnt sound like the best job in the world. But the two officers and 13 Army enlisted men who drew that assignment last month call it good duty. Their job is to see that nothing disturbs the site of the Jan. 12 crash of a chartered C 46 plane high in the chill mountains 37 miles northeast of Logan. The crash carried 37 homeward bound Korean veterans and three crew members to their deaths. Because of severe winter conditions deep snow, cold, impassable roads the bodies were left at the site. They will be removed when weather permits. Until then this G. I. guard must see that nothing disturbs the plane wreckage which may turn up a clue to cause of the crash or the victims. They must keep away curious humans, hungry animals and birds. A base camp has been set up at Beaver Junction in Logan Canyon, seven miles south of the crash site. At the scene of the wreck two men are stationed constantly. They work 24 hours and are off 48. They are supplied from the base camp but plenty of rations are kept on hand up at the wreck too. Sometimes extra bad weather blocks the makeshift road which the Army Weasles use to supply the crash site camp. At the base camp, where Chief W O John K. Krauter, Philadelphia, is in charge, living is done in style. Tents have wood floors and are snug. Water is obtained from a nearby ski lodge. Food is excellent and plentiful. Yep, its good duty now but there is a grisly task ahead.
