Ogden Standard Examiner OGDEN, UTAH FRIDAY EVENING, JULY 24, 1953 Pioneer Day 50 Years Ago Fifty years ago today, on July 24, 1903, residents of Ogden and its vicinity were celebrating Pioneer Day at Glenwood (now Lorin Farr) Park, Hot Springs, Ogden Canyon and the Fair Grounds. According to the files of this newspaper, the mayor of Ogden, William Glasmann, addressed the celebrants at Hot Springs. He opened his address by declaring, Fifty six years ago today the Pioneers settled in Utah. He closed with an appeal for county wide celebrations on the Fourth of July in one year and of Pioneer Day in the next year. While we love the Pioneers we also love the revolutionary fathers, Mayor Glasmann said. The automobile was here to stay, as indicated by news from Europe that one car had been driven as fast as 60 miles an hour in a contest in Ireland, but most of the Ogden celebrants reached the recreation ground in and around Ogden by means of horse and buggy, street car, bicycle or shanks mare. A balloon ascension with a parachute leap was the feature of the Glenwood Park program. The Peery family mansion, the Virginia, had just been opened by Mr. and Mrs. P. T. Ferris as a family hotel. Utah Knitting Works was advertising it was making summer weight union suits. They clothed the wearer from neck to ankle. President Joseph T. Kingsbury of University of Utah and President W. J. Kerr of Agricultural College of Utah had mailed out the catalogs for the new college year. Southern Pacific had abolished the pay car system of paying its employes and was now paying by check. In New York Mayor Lowe refused a request for 10 permits to preach the Mormon gospel, but he permitted one missionary to preach as an experiment to see how it worked out.
