President McKay to Officiate Tabernacle Ground Breaking Hears By ALFRED GLADWELL Ground breaking ceremonies for Ogdens long awaited new LDS Tabernacle will be held in a few days with President David O. McKay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints officiating. Announcement that start of the building is finally at hand was made yesterday by President Scott B. Price of East Ogden Stake following awarding of a contract to Mark B. Garff of Salt Lake City. President Price is chairman of the tabernacle building committee. He said elaborate ceremonies marking start of the project will be held this week. Mr. Garff, an active member of the church, who has constructed many outstanding LDS buildings, submitted the low base bid of 466,000. The electric and plumbing bids were approximately 59,510. Furnishings and landscaping will cost approximately 125,000, making a total of 650,510. President Price said 60 per cent of the cost will be paid from the general funds of the church and 40 per cent is to be donated by members of the 11 stakes in the Ogden area. The edifice, which will be erected in the center of Tabernacle Park, will face Washington Boulevard. It will replace the pioneer tabernacle at Washington Boulevard and 22nd Street, which for a long time has been inadequate to accommodate large congregations attending conferences and other church meetings. To be finished in cast stone, the attractively designed building will include a large auditorium, a balcony, foyer, two rooms one large and the other of medium size for smaller meetings, a choir practice room, a foyer, and restrooms. The large tower of the new tabernacle will rise about 160 feet. It was approximately five years ago when President David O. McKay member of the first presidency at that time authorized the stake presidents to build a new tabernacle. Delays were occasioned due to suggestions for a recreational hall and other units to be included.
