And Into Infinity Salt Lake Tribune Oct 5th 1953 One of the nations outstanding scientists died in California last week, yet because astronomy, his branch of science, is beyond the ken of ordinary men, his name was scarcely known to the public. Dr. Edwin P. Hubbles work was revolutionary. He found evidence that the entire universe is gradually expanding and blowing up. He also completely changed all ideas as to the size of the universe. Before him, astronomers had thought that the whole stellar system was contained in the Milky Way. He was able to show that our star system is only one of hundreds of millions. The achievement which probably impressed laymen most was the building of the 200 inch telescope atop Mt. Palomar. Dr. Hubble joined the Mt. Wilson observatory staff in 1919 and was one of its most famed members. When he and his associates found that the Mt. Wilson telescope was inadequate for their attempt to prove that the universe is expanding, it was decided to build the gigantic telescope on Mt. Palomar, since known as Hubbles baby. The Mt. Palomar observatory is his monument. Who could want a better one? And he had a happy life, doing what he wanted most to do, looking at the stars and beyond them into infinity.
